Allergy Testing in London: Private Blood Tests for Food, Environmental and Drug Allergies

The Online GP by The Wellness offers private allergy blood testing at our Marylebone clinic, covering food allergens, environmental allergens (pollen, dust mite, pet dander, mould), drug allergies, and insect venom. All testing uses evidence-based specific IgE blood tests, the gold standard for allergy diagnosis recommended by NICE and the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI). Results are available within 3 to 5 working days and are interpreted by a GMC-registered doctor who explains what your results mean, advises on allergen avoidance, can prescribe medication (antihistamines, nasal sprays, adrenaline auto-injectors), and can refer to a specialist allergist for complex cases. No referral is required. Same-day blood test appointments are available.

Why Evidence-Based Allergy Testing Matters

Allergy is one of the most common chronic conditions in the UK, affecting approximately 1 in 4 people at some point in their lives (Allergy UK, 2025). Yet allergy services are among the most under-resourced areas of NHS care. NHS referral to a specialist allergist can take months, and many GPs lack the time for thorough allergy assessment within a standard 10-minute appointment.

Meanwhile, the private market is flooded with unvalidated "intolerance tests" marketed directly to consumers. IgG food intolerance panels, hair analysis, electrodermal testing, and kinesiology are widely available but are not supported by clinical evidence. NICE, BSACI, and EAACI all advise against these tests because they produce unreliable results that can lead to unnecessary dietary restrictions, nutritional deficiencies, and missed diagnoses of genuine allergies.

At The Online GP by The Wellness, we offer only evidence-based specific IgE blood testing, the same methodology used in NHS allergy clinics and recommended by international guidelines. This means your results are clinically meaningful and can be used to guide genuine management decisions.

What We Test For

Food allergens. The most common food allergens in the UK include cow's milk, hen's egg, wheat, soy, peanut, tree nuts (almond, cashew, walnut, hazelnut, pistachio, Brazil nut, pecan), fish, shellfish (prawn, crab, lobster), and sesame. If you suspect a food allergy based on symptoms after eating specific foods (hives, swelling, itching, throat tightening, gastrointestinal disturbance, or anaphylaxis), targeted IgE testing can confirm or exclude the allergy.

Environmental allergens. Grass pollen (the most common cause of hay fever in the UK), tree pollen (birch, oak, plane), house dust mite, cat dander, dog dander, and mould spores (Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium). If you have seasonal rhinitis (hay fever), perennial rhinitis (year-round nasal symptoms), or asthma that worsens in certain environments, identifying the specific trigger allows targeted avoidance and treatment.

Drug allergies. If you have had a suspected allergic reaction to a medication (penicillin is the most commonly reported drug allergy), blood testing can help clarify whether a true allergy exists. Many people labelled as "penicillin allergic" are not truly allergic, and confirming or excluding the allergy has significant implications for future antibiotic choices.

Insect venom. Bee and wasp venom IgE testing for patients who have had significant reactions to stings. Confirms whether venom immunotherapy (desensitisation) should be considered.

The Testing Process

Step 1: Consultation. Your doctor discusses your symptoms, their timing and triggers, your medical history, and any previous allergy testing or reactions. This clinical history is essential for selecting the right allergens to test and for interpreting results in context.

Step 2: Blood draw. A simple blood sample is taken at our clinic. No skin prick testing is required (though this can be arranged via specialist referral if needed). The blood test measures specific IgE antibodies to the selected allergens.

Step 3: Laboratory analysis. Your sample is analysed at an accredited UK laboratory. Results are typically available within 3 to 5 working days.

Step 4: Doctor interpretation. A GMC-registered doctor reviews your results alongside your clinical history. IgE results must be interpreted in context because a positive result indicates sensitisation (your immune system produces antibodies to that allergen) but does not always mean clinical allergy (that you will have symptoms on exposure). Your doctor explains the significance of each result and what it means for you practically.

Step 5: Management plan. Based on your results and symptoms, your doctor recommends an appropriate management strategy. This may include specific allergen avoidance advice, antihistamine prescriptions (for hay fever, urticaria), nasal steroid sprays (for allergic rhinitis), adrenaline auto-injector prescription (for patients at risk of anaphylaxis), allergy action plan for schools, workplaces, or travel, referral to a specialist allergist for complex cases or consideration of immunotherapy, and medical letters documenting your allergies for airlines, employers, or restaurants.

Frequently Asked Questions

What allergy tests do you offer? Specific IgE blood tests for food, environmental, drug, and insect venom allergens. Evidence-based testing recommended by NICE and BSACI.

How much does it cost? Depends on the panel. Contact us on WhatsApp for current pricing. Multi-allergen panels are more cost-effective than individual tests.

What is the difference between allergy and intolerance testing? IgE allergy testing (which we offer) is evidence-based and clinically validated. IgG "intolerance" testing is not recommended by NICE, BSACI, or EAACI due to lack of clinical evidence.

Do I need a referral? No. Book directly. A GP consultation can help determine which allergens to test.

How long for results? 3 to 5 working days. Doctor reviews and discusses results with you.

Can you prescribe EpiPens? Yes. Adrenaline auto-injectors, antihistamines, nasal sprays, and other allergy medications. Allergy action plans provided.

Do you test children? Yes. All ages. Allergy management plans and school medical letters available.
