Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Check in London: Private Cardiovascular Risk Assessment
High blood pressure and high cholesterol are the two most significant modifiable risk factors for heart attack and stroke. Together, they contribute to approximately 50% of all cardiovascular events (British Heart Foundation, 2025). Both are completely silent, producing no symptoms until they cause a potentially life-threatening event. Approximately 1 in 3 UK adults have high blood pressure, and over half of UK adults have raised cholesterol (NHS England, 2026). The only way to know your numbers is to check them. The Online GP by The Wellness offers same-day blood pressure measurement and cholesterol testing at our Marylebone clinic, with results interpreted by a GMC-registered doctor who explains your cardiovascular risk and recommends clear next steps. GP consultations from £79 include blood pressure measurement. Our Heart Health Scan at £495 provides the most thorough cardiovascular assessment available.

Why These Numbers Matter
Cardiovascular disease remains the single biggest cause of death worldwide, and in the UK it kills approximately 170,000 people per year (British Heart Foundation, 2025). The majority of these deaths are preventable through early identification and management of risk factors.
High blood pressure (hypertension) damages blood vessels over time, increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, heart failure, and vascular dementia. It affects approximately 1 in 3 UK adults, and roughly half of those with hypertension are undiagnosed because it causes no symptoms. NHS England reported in February 2026 that online searches for high blood pressure "skyrocketed" in 2025, reflecting growing public awareness.
High cholesterol leads to fatty deposits (atherosclerosis) in the arterial walls, narrowing them and increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. It affects over half of UK adults but, like blood pressure, produces no symptoms. The NHS.uk page on high cholesterol received 1.7 million visits in 2025, making it the fifth most-viewed health condition on the NHS website.
The critical point is that both conditions are highly treatable. Blood pressure medications are among the most effective treatments in all of medicine, reducing heart attack risk by 20 to 25% and stroke risk by 35 to 40% (NICE, 2024). Statins reduce cardiovascular events by approximately 25 to 35% in high-risk patients. But treatment requires diagnosis, and diagnosis requires measurement.
What We Check and How
Blood pressure. Measured at every in-person consultation using a validated electronic monitor. If your reading is elevated (140/90 mmHg or above), your doctor will discuss whether this is likely to represent true hypertension or a situational elevation (white coat effect). Options for confirming the diagnosis include home blood pressure monitoring (we can advise on technique and provide a recommended monitor) and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), which measures your blood pressure at regular intervals over 24 hours during your normal daily activities.
Lipid profile. A fasting blood test measuring total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol (the "protective" type), LDL cholesterol (the "harmful" type), and triglycerides. A non-fasting sample can provide total cholesterol and HDL, but fasting (8 to 12 hours, water permitted) is recommended for the most accurate LDL and triglyceride readings. Results in 24 to 48 hours.
Cardiovascular risk calculation. Your doctor uses QRISK3, the NICE-recommended risk calculator, to estimate your 10-year risk of a cardiovascular event. This integrates cholesterol, blood pressure, age, sex, ethnicity, smoking status, diabetes, family history of premature cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, atrial fibrillation, and other factors. A QRISK3 score of 10% or above is the threshold at which NICE recommends considering statin therapy.
Additional markers. Depending on your profile, your doctor may also test HbA1c (diabetes screening), fasting glucose, CRP (inflammatory marker associated with cardiovascular risk), liver function (baseline before starting statins), kidney function (relevant to blood pressure medication choice), and thyroid function (thyroid disorders affect cholesterol and heart rate).

Lifestyle First, Then Medication If Needed
NICE guidelines are clear: lifestyle modification is the foundation of cardiovascular risk reduction, and medication is an addition to, not a replacement for, healthy living.
Dietary changes. Reducing saturated fat intake, increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, reducing salt to less than 6g per day, and increasing intake of oily fish (omega-3 fatty acids) all lower cholesterol and blood pressure. The Mediterranean diet has the strongest evidence base for cardiovascular protection.
Physical activity. At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week (brisk walking, cycling, swimming) reduces blood pressure by an average of 5 to 8 mmHg and improves lipid profiles.
Weight management. Losing even 5 to 10% of body weight in overweight individuals can significantly reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. Our doctors can discuss dietary strategies and, for eligible patients, medical weight management including GLP-1 medications.
Alcohol reduction. Keeping alcohol intake within the recommended 14 units per week (and ideally lower) reduces blood pressure.
Smoking cessation. The single most effective thing a smoker can do for their cardiovascular health. Your doctor can discuss cessation strategies and prescribe aids if needed.
If lifestyle changes alone are insufficient to bring your numbers into a safe range, your doctor will discuss medication options. This is a shared decision, not a prescription imposed on you. Your doctor will explain the evidence, the expected benefits, the potential side effects, and the alternatives, so you can make an informed choice.
The Heart Health Scan: Going Beyond Numbers
Blood tests tell you about circulating risk factors. They do not show you what is happening to your heart and blood vessels. Our Heart Health Scan at £495 combines blood tests with imaging to provide a structural and functional assessment.
Echocardiogram. Assesses heart chamber size, valve function, wall thickness, and pumping strength (ejection fraction). Identifies structural heart disease that blood tests alone cannot detect.
Carotid Doppler. Evaluates blood flow in the carotid arteries (neck arteries supplying the brain). Detects narrowing (stenosis) that increases stroke risk. A finding of significant carotid stenosis may change your management even if cholesterol levels appear borderline.
Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening. Measures the abdominal aorta for enlargement. AAA affects approximately 1 in 20 men over 65 and can be fatal if it ruptures undetected.
Combined with blood tests for lipids, HbA1c, and inflammatory markers, the Heart Health Scan provides the most comprehensive non-invasive cardiovascular assessment available. Our Executive Body Scan at £695 adds full abdominal ultrasound, thyroid scan, and extensive blood work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a blood pressure and cholesterol check at your clinic? Yes. Blood pressure at every in-person consultation from £79. Lipid profile via blood test with results in 24 to 48 hours.
What is a good cholesterol level? Total cholesterol below 5 mmol/L, LDL below 3 mmol/L for general population. Lower targets for high-risk individuals.
What blood pressure reading is too high? 140/90 mmHg or above in clinic. Single readings need confirmation. Your doctor will advise.
Should I be on statins? Depends on your overall cardiovascular risk (QRISK3 score), not just cholesterol. Your doctor calculates this and discusses with you.
How often should I check? Annually from age 40. More frequently if you have risk factors or are on treatment.
Can you prescribe medication? Yes. Blood pressure and cholesterol medications prescribed by GMC-registered doctors. Included in consultation fee.
Do you offer cardiac ultrasound? Yes. Heart Health Scan (£495): echocardiogram, carotid Doppler, AAA screening. Executive Body Scan (£695) for the most comprehensive assessment.
