Driver Medicals in London: HGV, PCV and Taxi Assessments from a Private GP

Reviewed by The Wellness Team.

If you drive for a living, your licence is your livelihood, and the medical that protects it should be thorough, quick and done right the first time. We carry out driver medicals at our Marylebone clinic for HGV and lorry drivers, bus and coach drivers, and taxi and private hire drivers.

Enquire by WhatsApp, telephone or email with the type of medical you need and your deadline, and we will confirm availability and the fee before you book.

Who needs a driver medical

HGV and lorry drivers. A D4 medical examination is needed when you first apply for a Group 2 licence, then at renewal from age 45 every five years, and annually from 65.

Bus and coach drivers. PCV entitlements follow the same Group 2 rules and the same D4 examination.

Taxi and private hire drivers. Transport for London and most local licensing authorities require a medical assessment confirming you meet the Group 2 standard, on first application and at intervals after.

What the assessment covers

To book or ask a question, message WhatsApp or call 020 3951 3429.

The examination follows the DVLA Group 2 standard, which is stricter than the ordinary car licence standard because of the size and passenger responsibility of the vehicles involved.

Vision testing, with your glasses or lenses if you wear them. Blood pressure measurement. A review of your medical history, including heart conditions, diabetes, sleep apnoea, neurological conditions and any medication that affects driving. The doctor completes and signs your D4 form or the relevant licensing authority form at the appointment where the standard is met.

How to make it a single visit

Most delays come from missing paperwork, not from the examination. Bring the right form, your driving licence, your glasses or contact lenses if you use them, and a list of your regular medicines. If you have a significant medical history, a brief summary from your GP records helps the doctor complete the form accurately on the day.

The D4 form itself is free to download from gov.uk, or your licensing authority will supply their own version.

Questions people ask

Can any doctor do a D4 medical?

The DVLA requires the D4 to be completed by a registered medical practitioner, and our doctors are GMC-registered and experienced in Group 2 assessments. Some licensing authorities ask that the doctor has access to your medical records, so check your authority's exact wording when you book and we will advise.

How long does a driver medical take?

Plan for around half an hour. If your history is straightforward and you bring the right documents, the form is usually completed and signed at the same visit.

What if I have a medical condition?

A condition does not automatically mean failing the standard. Well-controlled diabetes, treated blood pressure and many cardiac histories can still meet Group 2 rules, but the doctor needs the full picture. Bring your medication list and any recent clinic letters, and be straight about your history, because the doctor is assessing fitness honestly, not looking for reasons to refuse.

How much does a driver medical cost?

Fees depend on the type of medical and are confirmed before you book. Message us with the form you need completed and your deadline, and we will come back with availability and the fee.
