Could sleep apnoea explain tiredness despite a normal executive health check?
It could be one possibility, but tiredness has many causes and cannot be diagnosed from a screening package. Normal routine blood tests do not directly measure breathing during sleep. A useful executive review asks about symptoms, not only laboratory numbers.
If you are a director who is struggling through meetings, relying on caffeine or feeling sleepy while travelling, describe what actually happens. A report that looks reassuring is not a reason to dismiss persistent symptoms. The next step may be a focused clinical assessment rather than a larger general blood panel.
Which symptoms are worth mentioning?
Mayo Clinic lists loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping during sleep, morning headache, waking with a dry mouth, difficulty staying asleep and excessive daytime sleepiness among possible symptoms. Irritability and difficulty paying attention can also occur. Not everyone with sleep apnoea snores, and snoring alone does not establish a diagnosis.
If a partner has noticed breathing pauses, include that history with their agreement. Bring a concise account of your sleep schedule, daytime symptoms, alcohol use, medicines and any shift work or frequent travel. A wearable sleep score can be useful context, but it is not the same as a diagnostic assessment.
Why might routine screening miss it?
A blood test, resting ECG or body scan answers a different question from a sleep assessment. Sleep apnoea is assessed through the history and, when appropriate, testing that measures breathing during sleep. Buying more unrelated tests does not necessarily answer why you are sleepy.
This matters when comparing executive packages. Ask what happens if the doctor identifies a possible sleep disorder, whether sleep testing is included or separately arranged and who will review the result. Do not assume that a premium price means every specialist test is part of the appointment.
What might a sleep assessment involve?
The clinician may ask about symptoms and refer to a sleep service. Mayo Clinic describes overnight polysomnography, which records breathing and other physiological measurements, and simplified home sleep tests for suitable patients. The choice depends on the suspected condition and the clinical situation.
Home testing can miss sleep apnoea. A result in the standard range may not end the assessment if symptoms remain convincing; a clinician may recommend a sleep-centre study. This is why a test should sit within a pathway with someone responsible for interpretation, rather than being sold as a stand-alone reassurance score.
Does sleep apnoea matter beyond feeling tired?
Mayo Clinic describes associations and complications involving high blood pressure, heart problems and metabolic health, as well as daytime fatigue. Those links support taking symptoms seriously. They do not mean that every tired executive has sleep apnoea or that screening everyone with a sleep study has a proven benefit.
A good review also considers other causes of fatigue and poor sleep, including medicines, mental health, work patterns and other illness. The point is to choose the next useful step from the history, not to force every symptom into one diagnosis.
What can you do while waiting for review?
Keep a simple sleep and symptom diary and follow any safety advice from your clinician. Do not use someone else's breathing device or buy treatment based only on an app result. Treatment options depend on the diagnosis, severity and individual circumstances; they can include behavioural measures, breathing support or other approaches.
If you are sleepy while driving, do not drive. Seek medical advice promptly about safety and any relevant driving obligations. Do not assume that opening a window, more coffee or a normal screening report makes driving safe.
What should the executive review deliver?
Ask for a written next step: whether further assessment is indicated, who arranges it, what it costs and who contacts you with the result. If you work internationally, clarify how follow-up will continue when you leave London.
Seek urgent help for sudden severe breathlessness, chest pain, collapse or other acute symptoms rather than waiting for a sleep appointment. Executive screening is for planned assessment, not emergency care.
Choosing a doctor-led executive assessment in London
The value of a premium assessment is the clinical discussion, a clear account of limitations and a follow-up plan you can act on. Test count alone is not a measure of quality. Ask what each proposed investigation could change and what happens if it finds something unexpected.
As of October 2026, The Online GP executive body-scan option starts from £6,995. The appropriate scope depends on a clinical discussion; additional investigations and specialist follow-up should be confirmed and quoted separately. A wider package is not automatically the right starting point for an isolated symptom or abnormal result.
Discuss your goals with The Online GP, or read the executive body-scan guide before deciding which assessment fits. Confirm the current inclusions, preparation and follow-up arrangements before booking.
