A cough that makes leaving home difficult can still need a proper examination. A private GP home visit in London may be an appropriate route for a stable adult who needs face-to-face assessment but finds a clinic journey difficult. It is not a substitute for emergency care. The first question is how unwell you are, not how quickly a visiting doctor can reach your address.
When should you call 999 instead of requesting a visit?
Call 999 for severe breathing difficulty, collapse or a life-threatening emergency. Chest pain, new confusion, blue or grey lips, or a rapid serious deterioration need urgent assessment rather than waiting for a private appointment. Do not use a hotel room, home visit or remote consultation as an alternative to emergency services when emergency care is needed.
If you are unsure how urgently you need help, contact NHS 111. Tell the service about breathlessness, chest discomfort, your existing conditions and how quickly symptoms have changed. A clinician can advise on the right place for assessment. A convenient location does not make an unsafe wait appropriate.
Why might a cough need an examination?
Cough can accompany a short-lived respiratory infection, but similar symptoms can have other causes. The history, breathing pattern, temperature and examination help a clinician decide whether further investigation is needed. NICE recommends face-to-face assessment where an adequate assessment cannot be made remotely, serious illness is suspected or an underlying condition may be worsened by the infection.
A visiting doctor can assess you in person where a home visit is clinically suitable. That does not mean every chest symptom can be diagnosed or managed in the room. Some people need hospital care, imaging or another assessment setting. The consultation should identify that need rather than promise that staying at home is always the answer.
Ask about a GP visit to your London home or hotel
Does a chest infection always need antibiotics?
No. Many acute coughs improve without antibiotics. NICE advises that an acute cough can last up to three or four weeks, and treatment depends on the clinical picture, underlying risks and whether a person is systemically very unwell. The colour of sputum or the inconvenience of a business trip does not settle the decision by itself.
Explain any recent antibiotics, allergies, lung or heart conditions and immune-system problems. If a prescription is appropriate, ask what it is intended to treat and when improvement should begin. Do not take leftover antibiotics or someone else's inhaler to avoid an assessment. Treatment and follow-up should be individual, not a standard package attached to a visit.
What should you tell us before a London home or hotel visit?
Start with your symptoms and when they began. Describe whether you are breathless at rest or during ordinary activity, whether there is chest pain and whether you have become noticeably worse. Mention pregnancy, recent travel, relevant medical conditions and current medicines. These details help the team discuss the appropriate route; they are not a remote guarantee that a visit is safe.
For a hotel or serviced apartment, give the full address, postcode and a reliable contact number. Explain access arrangements and whether you can speak privately. Ask the team to confirm coverage and timing for your exact location. Do not assume that a postcode, an enquiry message or a payment by itself means a doctor is on the way.
What should a useful consultation leave you with?
You should understand the working assessment, what remains uncertain and whether tests or another care setting are needed. Ask who will review any results, how you will hear from them and what to do if symptoms change before that happens. An examination is valuable because it informs a decision, not because it guarantees a particular diagnosis or prescription.
If you are visiting London, explain when you leave and where you will be staying afterwards. A follow-up plan needs a way to reach you and a clear person responsible for outstanding results. Bring relevant reports and medicine packaging, particularly where a medicine has a different name outside the UK.
Discuss the appropriate assessment route
How are fees and practical arrangements confirmed?
The Wellness offers a route to request a doctor at a London home, hotel or office. The team should confirm whether the visit is appropriate, the location, the proposed time and the complete consultation fee before you commit. Ask which tests, medicines, prescriptions or subsequent appointments would be charged separately. Current availability depends on the individual enquiry.

A considered next step, at the right place
For stable symptoms where a clinician agrees that a visit is suitable, being assessed at home or at your hotel can remove an unnecessary journey while keeping the focus on your health. Contact The Online GP, part of The Wellness, with the symptoms first and your London location second. If symptoms worsen rapidly or significantly, seek reassessment rather than waiting for the planned visit.
