Gut Health Screening in London

Gut health has become one of the most marketed corners of wellness, and much of what is sold under that banner is not medicine. Symptoms like bloating, cramping, altered bowel habit, reflux and unexplained fatigue are common, genuinely disruptive and worth investigating properly, yet the market has filled with home kits and food-intolerance panels that promise answers the science does not support. Proper gut health screening is doctor-led, uses the tests that are actually validated, and is honest about which findings mean something and which do not. That honesty is what turns a set of symptoms into a diagnosis and a plan.

At The Online GP by The Wellness in Marylebone, gut health assessment is run by expert, GMC-registered doctors who order the right investigations, interpret them in context and act on what they find. Same-day and next-day appointments are available, three minutes from Baker Street, open weekends.

The tests that are genuinely validated

Good gut screening starts with the investigations that carry real diagnostic weight. Faecal calprotectin is one of the most useful tests in the field, because it distinguishes inflammatory bowel disease, which needs specialist care, from irritable bowel syndrome, which is managed differently, and it prevents both overtreatment and missed diagnoses. Coeliac serology identifies gluten-related disease that is frequently missed for years. Testing for Helicobacter pylori finds a treatable bacterial cause of reflux, ulcers and long-term stomach problems. Stool testing detects infection and inflammation, and targeted blood tests assess iron, inflammation, thyroid and nutritional status that gut problems both cause and reveal. These are the tests that change management, and a doctor decides which of them your symptoms actually call for.

Where the market oversells

Two things dominate gut-health marketing and deserve caution. Microbiome sequencing kits, which map the bacteria in your stool and generate colourful reports, are a fascinating area of research but remain poorly validated for guiding individual treatment, and the dietary advice attached to them is often generic. So-called food-intolerance tests based on IgG antibodies are widely sold and not supported by the evidence, because IgG generally reflects exposure to a food rather than intolerance to it, which means these tests routinely lead people to cut out foods for no good reason. A doctor-led service will tell you this plainly and steer you toward investigations that earn their keep.

The doctor-led approach

Gut symptoms are best assessed by a clinician who takes a proper history, examines you, orders the validated tests, and knows when a symptom pattern needs urgent investigation rather than reassurance. Warning signs such as unexplained weight loss, bleeding, persistent change in bowel habit or a family history of bowel cancer change the plan entirely and must not be lost inside a wellness package. Where treatment helps, from targeted dietary change to evidence-based probiotic support and, where needed, prescription treatment or specialist referral, it is arranged through the same clinic, so your assessment becomes a plan rather than a report you are left to interpret alone.
