HPV Vaccine (Gardasil 9)-The Cancer-Preventing Vaccine for Adults, and What It Costs
The HPV vaccine is one of the very few vaccines that prevents cancer, not just infection, and that is the reason it is worth thinking about well beyond school age. Human papillomavirus causes almost all cervical cancer and a large share of anal, throat, penile, vulval and vaginal cancers, as well as genital warts, and Gardasil 9, the vaccine used here, protects against nine HPV types including the ones responsible for the great majority of those cancers. It is given routinely to children because it works best before any exposure, but adults who missed the school programme, or who had an older two-strain vaccine, frequently still benefit, and it is licensed and recommended for both women and men well into adulthood. Because HPV is so common and exposure to one type does not mean exposure to all nine, vaccination remains worthwhile for many adults who are already sexually active. Before you commit, message us for a GP consultation for a professional opinion on your suitability for the vaccine. At The Online GP by The Wellness in Marylebone, a GMC-registered doctor advises on suitability and gives genuine Gardasil 9, ordered in for you, at £390 per dose or £975 for the full three-dose course. Fees appear further down this page.

Why the HPV vaccine matters
Because it prevents cancer. Human papillomavirus is a very common virus, passed on by skin-to-skin and sexual contact, and while most infections clear on their own, persistent infection with high-risk types causes cellular changes that can progress to cancer over years. HPV is responsible for almost all cervical cancer, and a substantial proportion of anal, oropharyngeal (throat), penile, vulval and vaginal cancers, cancers that are rising in some groups, particularly HPV-related throat cancer in men. The vaccine also prevents most genital warts.
Vaccinating against HPV therefore does something few vaccines do: it heads off cancers years or decades before they could develop. The routine childhood programme has already driven dramatic falls in the infections and pre-cancerous changes that lead to cervical cancer, which is the clearest possible evidence that it works. For an adult, the same logic applies where there is still benefit to be had, and working out whether there is, is exactly what the assessment is for.
Who benefits, including adults who missed it
The vaccine works best before any exposure to HPV, which is why it is given to children, but that does not mean adults have missed their chance. Many adults who did not have the vaccine at school, or who received an older vaccine covering fewer strains, still benefit, because HPV has many types and being exposed to one does not confer protection against the other eight that Gardasil 9 covers. It is licensed and used well into adulthood, and recommended for both women and men, with particular value for men who have sex with men, for whom the routine programme came late.
The honest nuance is that the benefit is generally greater the less prior exposure someone has had, so a younger adult or someone with few partners gains more than someone with extensive prior exposure, though even the latter often gains some protection against types they have not encountered. This is a personal calculation rather than a blanket yes or no, and a doctor talks it through with you, your age, your history and your risk, so the decision is informed rather than assumed either way. For a great many adults, the answer is that it is still worth having.

Gardasil 9, and how many doses you need
Gardasil 9 is the current nine-valent vaccine, protecting against HPV types 6 and 11, which cause most genital warts, and 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58, the high-risk types responsible for the great majority of HPV-related cancers. It is a more comprehensive vaccine than the older two- and four-strain versions, which is why someone who had an earlier vaccine may still gain from it. The vaccine used here is genuine Gardasil 9, ordered in for each patient.
The number of doses depends on age. Younger teenagers who start before their fifteenth birthday need two doses, while those starting at fifteen or older, which covers all adults, need three doses over six months, typically at zero, two and six months, and people with weakened immune systems need three doses regardless of age. A doctor confirms the right schedule for you, and because the vaccine is ordered per patient, the course is planned in advance. Completing the full course matters, because the protection depends on it.
What does the HPV vaccine cost in London
The HPV vaccine is not routinely funded on the NHS for adults outside the eligible groups, so for most adults it is a private purchase, and it is available at a range of providers and price points. A full private Gardasil 9 course of three doses commonly runs into several hundred pounds wherever it is given, because it is three separate doses of a genuinely expensive vaccine, and cheaper single-dose prices quoted elsewhere still add up across the course and may not include a doctor's assessment of whether and how you should have it.
At The Online GP by The Wellness the vaccine is doctor-led and genuine Gardasil 9, ordered in for you, at £390 per dose or £975 for the full three-dose course, given in clinic and able to be administered during an existing appointment. Many patients have a workplace wellness allowance or health benefit that covers vaccination of this kind, and we provide an itemised invoice for reimbursement. The figure that matters is the value of protection against several cancers over a lifetime, delivered with proper advice on whether it is right for you, rather than the lowest single-dose price bought without that guidance.
Why The Online GP by The Wellness is the best place in London for the HPV vaccine
Because the HPV vaccine is worth having done with proper advice, and that is how this works. A GMC-registered doctor assesses whether you are likely to benefit given your age and history, confirms the right schedule, two doses or three, and gives genuine Gardasil 9 ordered in for you, able to be administered during an existing appointment. The advice is honest, including where the benefit is smaller, the counselling covers what the vaccine does and does not do, and it can be combined with wider sexual and reproductive health care, including cervical screening and, where relevant, STI screening, in one place. The clinic is in Marylebone three minutes from Baker Street, the doctors are multilingual. For a vaccine that prevents cancer, getting proper advice and the genuine nine-strain vaccine is what matters.

Can adults have the HPV vaccine
Yes. It is licensed and recommended for adults, and many who missed the school programme or had an older vaccine still benefit, because Gardasil 9 covers nine HPV types and prior exposure to one does not protect against the others. A doctor advises on the benefit for your age and history.
How many doses of the HPV vaccine do I need
Those starting before age fifteen need two doses; those starting at fifteen or older, which covers all adults, need three doses over six months, as do people with weakened immune systems regardless of age. A doctor confirms your schedule.
Is the HPV vaccine worth it if I am already sexually active
Often, yes. Because HPV has many types and exposure to one does not mean exposure to all nine Gardasil 9 covers, vaccination frequently still offers protection. The benefit is generally greater with less prior exposure, which a doctor discusses with you.
