Meningitis Vaccine for International Students Coming to the UK: Essential Health Guide for 2026
Medically reviewed by The Online GP by The Wellness Medical Team - Last updated: 24 March 2026
If you are an international student starting university in the UK, you need the MenACWY meningitis vaccine (available free on the NHS for students up to age 25) and should strongly consider the MenB vaccine (available only privately). MenACWY covers four meningococcal strains but does not protect against meningitis B, the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in the UK and the strain behind the unprecedented 2026 Kent outbreak that has infected 29 people and killed two university-age students. Most international students arriving in the UK have neither vaccine. The Online GP by The Wellness in Marylebone, central London, offers both vaccines without NHS registration, making it the simplest route for international students who need protection quickly.

Why Meningitis Vaccination Is Essential for International Students
University is one of the highest-risk environments for meningococcal disease anywhere in the world. When hundreds or thousands of young people from different countries and regions come together for the first time, living in shared accommodation, socialising in crowded venues, and sharing drinks and vapes, the conditions for meningococcal transmission are ideal.
Between 10% and 25% of teenagers and young adults carry meningococcal bacteria in their throat without any symptoms. When you arrive at a UK university, you are suddenly exposed to carriers from all over the country and the world. Your immune system has not encountered these specific bacterial strains before, which makes you more susceptible to invasive disease if the bacteria reach your bloodstream.
The 2026 Kent outbreak demonstrates this precisely. The outbreak was linked to a nightclub event attended by University of Kent students. It spread rapidly through the student community, reaching 29 confirmed and probable cases within ten days. Two students died. England's Deputy Chief Medical Officer called it "the quickest-growing outbreak I've ever seen in my career."
As an international student, you face the same risk as UK students, but with an additional complication: you are less likely to have received the UK-recommended vaccines. Most countries outside the UK do not include MenB in their childhood schedules, and MenACWY formulations vary between countries. This means many international students arrive in the UK with incomplete meningococcal protection.
London universities including UCL, Imperial College, and King's College have issued statements in March 2026 specifically reminding international students to check their vaccination status in light of the outbreak.
Which Vaccines You Need and How to Get Them
MenACWY (protects against groups A, C, W, Y) This is the vaccine UKHSA recommends for all university students. It is available free on the NHS for international students up to age 25 who are starting university for the first time. To access it free, you will need to register with an NHS GP surgery near your university, which requires a UK address. Once registered, your GP can administer the vaccine at no cost.
If you cannot register with a GP quickly (the process can take days or weeks), or if you are over 25, you can access MenACWY privately at The Online GP by The Wellness without any registration. Simply contact us and book.
MenB (protects against group B, the most common UK strain) This is the critical gap. MenB is not available free on the NHS for students of any nationality. It is only offered free to UK babies born since 2015 and individuals with specific high-risk medical conditions. For everyone else, including all international students, private vaccination is the only route.
The Online GP by The Wellness offers private MenB vaccination from our Marylebone clinic, administered by GMC-registered doctors. We hold a direct relationship with the manufacturer's supply chain, which allows us to secure stock more quickly than many providers during the current national shortage. Rates reflect the elevated procurement environment. Contact us to discuss current availability and join our priority notification list if stock is temporarily unavailable.
MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) Two doses are essential. Measles outbreaks continue to occur on UK university campuses, with 2,911 confirmed cases across England in 2024. If you have not received two doses of MMR, arrange catch-up vaccination. This is available free from your NHS GP.
HPV (human papillomavirus) Protects against cervical and other cancers. Available free on the NHS if you missed it and are eligible. If not eligible for the NHS dose, private vaccination is available at our clinic.

Before You Arrive vs After You Arrive
If you are still in your home country: Check whether MenACWY and MenB vaccines are available locally. Bexsero (MenB) is licensed and available in many countries including across Europe, Australia, Canada, and parts of Asia and the Middle East. If you can complete your vaccination before departure, you will be protected from day one. Bring your vaccination records with you.
If you are already in the UK or arriving soon: Do not wait for NHS registration to be completed before seeking vaccination. Register with a GP surgery for your free MenACWY dose, but arrange private MenB vaccination at The Online GP by The Wellness immediately. We require no registration, no NHS number, and no UK address. Our Marylebone clinic is accessible from universities across London via Baker Street station. The accelerated MenB schedule (two doses, four weeks apart) means you can complete the course within your first month.
What to bring to your appointment: Any vaccination records from your home country (certificates, health booklets, or digital records), your passport or student ID, details of any medications you take, and information about any allergies or medical conditions. If you do not have vaccination records, our doctors will assess your coverage based on your age and country of origin.
What Your UK University Will Expect
UK universities do not legally require proof of meningitis vaccination for enrolment. However, they strongly recommend it. Following the Kent outbreak, universities across London and the UK have issued statements encouraging students to verify their vaccination status.
UKHSA's official guidance states that all new university students should have three vaccines: MenACWY, MMR, and HPV. International students who meet the same age criteria are eligible for free NHS MenACWY.
Some universities may ask for proof of TB testing if you are from a country where tuberculosis is more common. This is separate from meningitis vaccination and may be a requirement for your student visa. If you need TB testing, The Online GP by The Wellness can arrange this.
