Step 2: Describe Your Symptoms

Tell the GP about:

  • Burning or pain when urinating

  • Frequent need to urinate

  • Lower abdominal pain

  • Cloudy or strong-smelling urine

  • How long symptoms have lasted

Step 3: Get Treatment

If the GP confirms a UTI, they'll prescribe antibiotics. The prescription goes electronically to your chosen pharmacy. Collect it the same day.

UTI Symptoms

Classic UTI signs include:

  • Burning sensation when you pee

  • Needing to pee more often than usual

  • Urgency (sudden strong urge to urinate)

  • Pain in lower abdomen or back

  • Cloudy, dark, or strong-smelling urine

  • Feeling generally unwell

See a Doctor Urgently If You Have:

  • Fever or chills

  • Blood in urine

  • Severe back pain

  • Vomiting

  • Symptoms lasting more than 2 days without treatment

Can You Diagnose UTI Without a Urine Test?

For straightforward UTIs in women with typical symptoms, GPs can often diagnose based on symptoms alone and prescribe antibiotics.

When Testing Is Needed:

  • Recurrent UTIs

  • Symptoms not typical

  • Men (UTIs less common, need investigation)

  • Pregnant women

  • Not responding to treatment

We can arrange urine testing if clinically indicated.

UTI Treatment

First-Line Antibiotics for UTI:

  • Nitrofurantoin (3-7 days)

  • Trimethoprim (3 days)

You Should Feel Better Within:

  • 24-48 hours of starting antibiotics

  • Complete the full course even if symptoms improve

Self-Care Alongside Antibiotics:

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Urinate when you need to

  • Paracetamol for pain

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine
