How Video Consultations Work with Children
The Setup:
Find a quiet, well-lit space
Have your child nearby (on your lap for babies)
Use a phone or tablet you can move around
During the Consultation:
The GP will observe your child
Ask you detailed questions
Guide you to show specific things (throat, rash, ears)
May ask to see your child move or behave normally
What We Can Assess:
General wellbeing
Rashes and skin conditions
Throat examination (you hold the torch, we look via camera)
Breathing pattern
Alertness and behaviour
When Children Need In-Person Assessment
Some situations need face-to-face examination:
Very unwell children (lethargic, not responding normally)
Suspected serious infections
Ear examination for ear pain
Abdominal examination for tummy pain
Any concern that can't be adequately assessed remotely
The GP will tell you if in-person assessment is needed and advise where to go.
Prescriptions for Children
We prescribe appropriate medications for children including:
Antibiotics (correct paediatric dosing)
Antihistamines
Creams and ointments
Inhalers
Other medications as clinically indicated
Prescriptions are sent to your pharmacy with clear dosing instructions.
Red Flags - When to Seek Emergency Care
Call 999 or go to A&E if your child:
Is struggling to breathe
Has a rash that doesn't fade when you press a glass against it
Is unresponsive or very difficult to wake
Has a seizure
Is very pale, mottled, or blue
Is under 3 months with temperature over 38°C
A private GP is not for emergencies. If you're worried your child is seriously unwell, seek emergency care immediately.
