Private GP for International Students in London 2026. Your NHS Rights, What to Do When You Need a Doctor Today and How Families Abroad Can Help
International students in London are entitled to NHS care, and the first thing every student should do is register with an NHS GP near their university. In 2024/25 there were 685,565 international students at UK universities, around 1 in 4 of all students, and most pay the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 a year as part of their visa, which gives access to NHS services on broadly the same basis as UK residents. Prescriptions, dental care and eye tests are still charged in England, with exemptions such as free prescriptions for under 19s in full-time education. Before term starts, check that your MenACWY meningitis vaccine and 2 doses of MMR are up to date, since outbreaks are most common in shared student housing. Private care is useful alongside the NHS when you need a doctor the same day, a doctor at your halls or flat, a letter for extenuating circumstances, a consultation in your own language, or help with a medicine prescribed at home, because a prescription written abroad generally cannot be dispensed by a UK pharmacy. Families overseas can arrange an appointment for their son or daughter, and for students over 18 nothing is shared with parents without the student's consent. At The Wellness appointments are available the same day, 7 days a week, from £150 by video and £220 in person, in Arabic, French, Spanish and Dutch as well as English. Fees appear further down this page.

What NHS care are international students entitled to
If you paid the Immigration Health Surcharge with your student visa, you can use NHS services while your visa is valid, broadly on the same basis as people who live here permanently. That includes GP appointments, hospital care and NHS sexual health clinics.
Register with an NHS GP practice near your university or accommodation as soon as you arrive. Many universities have a practice on or near campus. Registration is free, and you do not need proof of address or immigration status to register, although practices often ask for it.
Some things are still charged. Prescriptions cost £9.90 per item in England, unless you are exempt, for example if you are under 19 and in full-time education. Dental treatment and eye tests are charged at NHS rates. Students on low incomes can apply for help with costs through the NHS Low Income Scheme.
Which vaccines should students check before term
MenACWY protects against 4 types of meningococcal disease, which causes meningitis and sepsis. It is offered free by the NHS to first-time university students up to the age of 25 who have not had it. Ask for it at your new GP practice if you are not sure.
MMR protects against measles, mumps and rubella, and 2 doses are needed. Mumps and measles outbreaks spread quickly in halls of residence.
Bring your vaccination records with you, translated if possible, so a doctor can see what you have had.
Ask about vaccines or records on WhatsApp or email team@thewellnesslondon.com.
When should a student call 999
Call 999 for a severe headache with a stiff neck, a dislike of bright light, confusion or a rash that does not fade when a glass is pressed against it, which can be signs of meningitis. Call 999 for chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, collapse, a seizure or a severe allergic reaction.
Look out for friends too. Meningitis can progress within hours, and someone who seems drowsy or confused should not be left to sleep it off.
What do students most often need a doctor for
Infections. Coughs, sore throats and ear infections in the first weeks of term, often called freshers' flu, are usually viral and settle with rest. A doctor checks for the minority that need treatment.
Mental health. Homesickness, academic pressure and isolation are common, and support helps. Your university wellbeing or counselling service is free and a good place to start. A doctor can assess whether anxiety or low mood needs treatment.
Sexual health and contraception. NHS sexual health clinics provide free, confidential testing and contraception, and private appointments are available when you would like to be seen sooner.
Medicines from home. A prescription written in another country generally cannot be dispensed by a UK pharmacy. A doctor can review your records, confirm the UK equivalent and prescribe. Controlled medicines, including some ADHD and pain medication, cannot be issued at a first consultation without established records, and bringing them into the UK has its own rules.
Letters for your university. If illness affects an exam or deadline, a doctor who has assessed you can write a letter for extenuating circumstances or mitigating circumstances.
When is a private doctor useful alongside the NHS
When you need to be seen today. A same-day appointment, usually arranged within hours, 7 days a week.
When you are too unwell to travel. A doctor can visit your halls, flat or hotel.
When you would like to speak your own language. Consultations are available in Arabic, French, Spanish and Dutch.
When a letter is urgent. Extenuating circumstances letters are usually issued within 24 hours of the consultation, and the same day where a deadline requires it.
When you are between visas or have just arrived and are not yet registered. You need no registration, referral or insurance to be seen privately.
Can parents arrange care from abroad
Yes. A parent or family member can message us to arrange an appointment, a home visit or a health check for a student in London, and pay for it.
Students aged 18 and over are adults in UK law, so their medical information is confidential. We discuss the appointment and results with the student, and share anything with family only when the student agrees. Most students are happy for a parent to be involved when they are asked.
