Private GP in London 2026. Same-Day Appointments, What a Consultation Actually Covers and What It Costs
The reason people go private for general practice is almost never the consultation itself, it is the waiting and the fragmentation around it. A standard NHS appointment is around 10 minutes, tests are requested and then reported days or weeks later by somebody who did not take the history, and a referral enters a queue measured in months. Private general practice changes 3 things. Time, with appointments of 20 to 45 minutes rather than 10, which is the difference between managing one symptom and working through a problem. Access, with same-day and evening appointments, video consultations and home visits. And continuity, where the doctor who takes the history also arranges the bloods, interprets them, prescribes, and writes the referral with a named consultant and a booked date rather than an open letter. What private general practice does not do is override clinical reality. It does not make a diagnosis appear where the evidence is not there, it cannot prescribe outside the law or good practice, and where the NHS is the right route, including for emergencies, cancer 2-week-wait pathways and anything needing hospital admission, we will say so. In-person consultation from £220, same-day video consultation from £150, home visits from £495. Fees appear further down this page.

What you actually get for the fee
Time first, because everything else follows from it. A 20 to 45 minute appointment allows a full history, an examination, an explanation and a plan in one sitting, rather than the triage-and-return cycle that short appointments force.
Testing arranged and interpreted by the same doctor. Bloods are taken at the clinic and run at an accredited partner laboratory, and the results come back to the person who ordered them with an explanation of what they mean for you rather than a list of flags. Where imaging is needed it is arranged at a specialist centre with consultant reporting.
Prescribing where it is clinically appropriate, issued as a private prescription you can take to any pharmacy.
Referral that arrives somewhere. A named consultant chosen for your problem, a letter that contains the history and the results, and the appointment booked rather than left with you to chase.
And a written summary, so you leave with the plan in writing and can share it with your NHS GP, which we encourage.
What we can and cannot do
The honest boundaries matter more than the list of services, so here they are.
We cannot prescribe on an NHS prescription. Private prescriptions are dispensed by any pharmacy and you pay the pharmacy's price for the drug, which for common generics is frequently less than the NHS prescription charge and for others considerably more.
We cannot issue NHS-funded onward care. A private referral leads to private consultant care, and where you want to transfer to an NHS pathway afterwards that is possible but is a separate step through your NHS GP.
Controlled drugs are prescribed only within the law and within GMC guidance, and generally not at a first remote consultation. Requests for opioids, benzodiazepines, stimulants and similar are assessed on clinical need with records sought, and declined where that is the right answer.
Emergencies go to emergency services. Chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe breathlessness, heavy bleeding, anaphylaxis or a serious injury need 999 or an emergency department, not an appointment with us.
Suspected cancer is not a place to lose time. Where symptoms meet criteria for an urgent 2-week-wait pathway, the NHS route is frequently faster than the private one and we will tell you when that is the case.
Ask whether we are the right route for your problem on WhatsApp or email team@thewellnesslondon.com.
What private general practice handles well
Persistent symptoms that have not been resolved elsewhere. Fatigue, unexplained weight change, recurrent infection, disturbed sleep, brain fog and low mood all have a defined differential that takes longer than 10 minutes to work through and a blood panel wider than 3 markers to exclude.
Anything where the answer depends on interpretation rather than a single number. Thyroid results in the grey zone, ferritin sitting just above the lower limit, an HbA1c drifting upwards, a borderline blood pressure reading.
Women's health across the perimenopausal transition, where fatigue, joint pain, sleep disruption and mood change are routinely attributed to stress and are frequently hormonal.
Men's health, including testosterone symptoms, prostate concerns and cardiovascular risk assessment, which men present with late and often only when something else prompts it.
Travel health and vaccination, sexual health testing, minor procedures, occupational and insurance medicals, and second opinions on a diagnosis you have already been given.
Care for visitors to London and for people who live here without an NHS registration, where a same-day appointment is the practical route to being seen at all.
How an appointment works
Contact us by WhatsApp, email or phone and you will usually be offered something the same day, 7 days a week.
Choose the format. In person at 10 Portman Square in Marylebone, 3 minutes from Baker Street. By video, which suits advice, results review, prescriptions and follow-up. Or at your home, hotel or office, which suits families, anyone unwell enough that travelling is unhelpful, and people whose day cannot accommodate a clinic visit.
The consultation covers history, examination where the format allows, and a plan. Bloods are taken at the time where they are part of that plan.
Results come back with a doctor's interpretation and, where something needs acting on, the next step arranged rather than described.

Why The Wellness is the best place in London for private general practice
Because the doctor who takes the history is the doctor who reads the results. Testing ordered by one clinician and reported to another is where most of the delay and most of the missed findings in private healthcare come from.
Because there is no membership gate. You are not asked for an annual retainer before being seen once, which matters if what you need is one appointment rather than a relationship.
Because referrals are made to a named consultant with the appointment booked. An open referral letter handed to a patient is an administrative task transferred rather than a referral completed.
Because we say when the NHS is the better route. Emergencies, suspected cancer pathways and anything requiring admission belong there, and telling you so costs us the appointment.
And because access is genuinely flexible. Same day, 7 days a week, in person, by video or at your home or hotel, with consultations available in English, Arabic, French, Spanish and Dutch.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a private GP appointment cost in London
Commonly £120 to £300 for a standard consultation, with membership practices adding an annual retainer of £1,000 to £5,000 or more. At The Wellness an in-person consultation is from £220, a same-day video consultation from £150, and a home, hotel or office visit from £495 daytime, with no membership required.
Can I see a private GP the same day
Yes. Same-day appointments are available 7 days a week at 10 Portman Square, Marylebone, in person, by video, or at your home, hotel or office.
Do I need to be registered to see a private GP
No. There is no registration requirement and no membership. This is why private general practice suits visitors to London and people without an NHS GP, as well as anyone who needs one appointment rather than ongoing care.
Can a private GP prescribe medication
Yes, where it is clinically appropriate, on a private prescription dispensed by any pharmacy. Private prescriptions cannot be issued on the NHS, so you pay the pharmacy's price for the drug. Controlled drugs are prescribed only within the law and GMC guidance and generally not at a first remote consultation.
Can a private GP refer me to an NHS consultant
A private referral leads to private consultant care. Transferring to an NHS pathway afterwards is possible but goes through your NHS GP as a separate step. Where an urgent NHS pathway such as a 2-week-wait cancer referral is the faster and better route, we will tell you.
Will my private GP records go to my NHS GP
Only with your consent, and we encourage it. You are given a written summary of the consultation and the results so that your NHS record stays complete.
