Private GP Video Appointments From Abroad | What a UK Doctor Can and Cannot Do

Written and reviewed by the clinical team at The Wellness

Direct answer

Being a UK resident or having a UK prescription does not automatically make an overseas video consultation suitable. The service must check the country where you are physically located, the doctor’s regulatory and insurance position, and any prescribing or dispensing restrictions. Ask about eligibility before paying. Advice, prescriptions, tests and documents each have different limits.

Your location changes the rules

Tell the service which country you are in now, where medicines would be dispensed and where you expect to receive follow-up. GMC principles require clinicians to consider registration requirements where they and the patient are based, insurance cover, local legal restrictions and medicine licensing. A UK doctor cannot assume that UK registration permits treatment in every country.

A UK prescription may not be usable locally

Before seeking a prescription, check whether the medicine and prescription format can lawfully be supplied where you are. A local pharmacy may require a locally authorised prescriber or a different document. Shipping medicines can involve import and export rules. Do not book on the assumption that a video call will produce a prescription accepted abroad. A medicine’s name, availability or licensed use may also differ.

Repeat treatment still needs a safety check

Bring the original medicine packaging, dose, prescribing history, allergies and recent monitoring results. A repeat request is not automatically safe because you have taken the medicine before. The doctor needs enough information to assess risks and a workable monitoring plan. An overseas local clinician may be the appropriate route when examination, urgent care or ongoing monitoring is needed.

Blood tests need a local plan

A doctor may explain which tests are clinically relevant, but a UK test request does not guarantee access to a laboratory abroad. Ask who can request the tests locally, how reports will be shared and who reviews them. Send the complete report, including units and reference ranges. Do not let the uncertainty of an international booking delay local assessment if you are becoming unwell.

Referrals and fit notes are not international passes

A referral may help explain a clinical concern, but the receiving specialist, insurer or health system decides whether to accept it. The same principle applies to a work document or fit note: check the employer’s and local requirements before booking. A doctor must assess whether a document is justified. No certificate, referral or acceptance by a third party is guaranteed.

Confirm eligibility before the fee

The Online GP rate card lists a video consultation at £150. That price does not establish that a consultation from your country is available or that treatment can be prescribed there. Contact the team first with your current country, the purpose of the appointment and any deadline. Ask what happens if the service cannot meet your needs and what the booking terms are.

When to use local care

For severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, seek urgent medical help where you are rather than waiting for an overseas call. A UK video service is not a substitute for local emergency care. The useful outcome of an eligibility check may be advice to arrange an appropriate local assessment, not an international prescription.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book simply because I am a UK citizen abroad?

Nationality alone does not establish eligibility. The service must consider your physical location and the relevant legal and clinical requirements.

Will a UK prescription work in another country?

Not necessarily. Local prescribing, dispensing and import rules apply; confirm the route before booking.

Can a UK fit note guarantee overseas employer acceptance?

No. The clinician decides whether a document is appropriate, and the employer or receiving organisation decides what it accepts.
