Thrush Treatment London. Same-Day Relief From An Online GP
Thrush is one of the most common reasons people contact a GP, and one of the easiest to treat quickly. Most cases can be diagnosed from your symptoms and treated the same day with a single-dose antifungal, without an examination. At The Online GP by The Wellness, a GMC-registered doctor can assess you by phone or video, send a prescription to your local pharmacy, and have you treated today.

Key points
Thrush is a yeast infection, not an STI, and it is very common
Most cases are diagnosed from symptoms alone, no swab needed
First-line treatment is a single fluconazole capsule or a short course of pessaries
Same-day phone or video consultation from £59, prescription included
Recurrent thrush (4 or more episodes a year) needs proper investigation
What is thrush, and why does it happen?
Thrush is an infection caused by a yeast called Candida, which normally lives on the skin and in the vagina harmlessly. Problems start when the balance tips and the yeast overgrows.
Common triggers include a recent course of antibiotics, pregnancy, poorly controlled diabetes, tight synthetic clothing, scented washes and douches, and a weakened immune system. Sometimes there is no obvious trigger at all.
Thrush in women usually causes itching, soreness and a thick white discharge that does not smell unpleasant. Thrush in men typically shows as redness, itching or a rash under the foreskin, sometimes with a thin discharge.
What thrush is not
Several conditions look like thrush but need different treatment.
Bacterial vaginosis: a thin grey discharge with a noticeable fishy smell, usually without much itching
STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea or trichomonas: can cause discharge, pain or bleeding and need testing, not guessing
Dermatitis or allergy to washes and wipes: itching without discharge that settles when the product is stopped
If you are unsure which of these fits, that is exactly what a short consultation is for. If there is any chance of an STI, we will say so and arrange testing rather than treating blind.
How an online GP treats thrush today
Most thrush can be managed entirely online. The doctor takes a focused history: your symptoms, how long they have been there, previous episodes, recent antibiotics, pregnancy status and any other conditions.
For straightforward thrush, first-line treatment is a single 150mg fluconazole capsule, or clotrimazole as a pessary and cream if you prefer a local treatment. The prescription goes to your nominated pharmacy the same day.
In pregnancy the advice changes: oral fluconazole is avoided and a 7-day course of a topical imidazole is used instead. This is one reason a proper consultation beats self-treating from a pharmacy shelf.
Treating a partner is not routinely needed. Candida is not classed as a sexually transmitted infection, although sex can sometimes trigger symptoms.
Recurrent thrush needs investigation, not another capsule
Recurrent thrush means four or more episodes in a year. Repeating the same single dose each time is not a plan.
A proper workup looks for the reason: a blood sugar check for undiagnosed diabetes, a review of antibiotic use and products that irritate the skin, and sometimes a swab to confirm the species, because some Candida types do not respond to standard fluconazole.
Where recurrence is confirmed, guidelines support an induction course followed by weekly fluconazole for six months. That kind of regimen should be set up and supervised by a doctor, which is what we do.
When you need to be seen in person
Online treatment suits most cases, but some situations need an examination, and we will tell you honestly if yours is one of them.
Fever, pelvic pain or feeling generally unwell
Abnormal bleeding between periods or after sex
Symptoms that have failed two courses of treatment
First episode under the age of 16
Pregnancy with pain, bleeding or concerns beyond typical thrush
If any of these apply, we can still see you. An in-person consultation at our London clinic is £220.
What does thrush treatment cost in London?
Private walk-in clinics in London commonly charge £100 to £250 for the consultation alone, before the cost of any medicine. High-street pharmacies sell fluconazole over the counter for under £15, but that gives you a capsule with no diagnosis, no check that it is actually thrush, and no plan if it comes back.
At The Online GP by The Wellness:
Phone consultation (15 minutes): £59
Video consultation: £150
In-person consultation: £220
The consultation includes diagnosis, treatment advice and a private prescription where appropriate. The pharmacy charges separately for the medicine itself, typically under £15 for single-dose fluconazole.

Frequently asked questions
Can thrush go away on its own?
Mild thrush sometimes settles without treatment, but symptoms often persist or return. A single-dose treatment is quick, cheap and far more reliable than waiting, so most people prefer to treat it.
Is thrush a sexually transmitted infection?
No. Candida lives in the body naturally and thrush is not classed as an STI. Sex can trigger symptoms, and untreated thrush can occasionally irritate a partner's skin, but routine partner treatment is not needed.
Can I use thrush treatment in pregnancy?
Yes, but the treatment changes. Oral fluconazole is avoided in pregnancy; guidelines recommend a 7-day course of a topical imidazole such as clotrimazole. Speak to a doctor before treating thrush while pregnant.
Why do I keep getting thrush after antibiotics?
Antibiotics kill the protective bacteria that keep Candida in check, so the yeast overgrows. If this happens to you repeatedly, mention it when antibiotics are prescribed; sometimes a preventive antifungal is appropriate.
Can men get thrush?
Yes. In men it usually affects the head of the penis and foreskin, causing redness, itching and sometimes a thin discharge. It responds to the same antifungals, usually as a cream.
How fast does fluconazole work?
Most people notice real improvement within 24 to 48 hours of a single 150mg dose, with symptoms settling fully over a few days. If nothing has improved after 3 days, get back in touch rather than repeating the dose.
