Why does language matter in a medical consultation?

Medicine depends on communication. A patient who cannot describe their symptoms precisely, or who does not fully understand the doctor's questions, risks receiving an inaccurate assessment. Research published in the British Medical Journal has consistently shown that language barriers in healthcare lead to diagnostic errors, lower patient satisfaction, reduced adherence to treatment, and worse clinical outcomes.

For Arabic-speaking patients in London, accessing a GP who speaks Arabic fluently removes this barrier entirely. The patient can describe their symptoms in their own words, using the expressions and context that come naturally. The doctor can ask nuanced follow-up questions. Medical explanations, prescriptions, and treatment plans are understood clearly the first time.

This is not a luxury. It is better medicine.

The Online GP by The Wellness employs GMC-registered doctors who are fluent in Arabic and trained in the UK medical system. They combine Arabic language fluency with full UK clinical competence. Our doctors also consult in English, Spanish, French, and Dutch.

What services are available in Arabic?

Every service provided by The Online GP is available with an Arabic-speaking doctor. There is no reduced service for non-English consultations. This includes same-day GP consultations for any medical condition (acute illness, chronic disease management, infections, pain, skin conditions, gastrointestinal issues, respiratory conditions, and any other GP-level concern), mental health consultations for anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, and other psychological conditions, with fit notes issued if clinically appropriate, prescriptions for medication (sent electronically to any UK pharmacy), sick notes and fit notes for employers, issued at the sole clinical discretion of the doctor following a genuine clinical assessment, medical letters and reports for employers, universities, courts, insurers, and government bodies, immigration medicals including TB screening and visa medical certificates, referral letters to private specialists across all medical and surgical specialties, blood tests and health screening including comprehensive panels and executive health checks, women's health consultations including contraception, HRT, pregnancy-related concerns, and gynaecological assessment, children's consultations (a parent or guardian must be present for patients under 16), and home visits across central London for patients who cannot travel.

Private GP for international visitors and Middle Eastern families in London

London is one of the most popular destinations for medical tourism and family travel from the Gulf states, the Levant, and North Africa. Visitors from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and other Arabic-speaking countries frequently need GP access during their stay, whether for acute illness, ongoing prescription management, medical certificates, or specialist referrals.

Common reasons international visitors contact us. Acute illness during a trip (respiratory infections, gastrointestinal illness, fever, injuries). Prescriptions for medication needed during the stay (visitors cannot access NHS prescriptions). Medical certificates for travel insurance claims, trip interruption, or fitness to fly. Referral letters to private specialists in London (Harley Street consultants, hospital specialists). Continuation of medication for chronic conditions (diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, mental health medication). Pre-travel health assessments and vaccination advice. Medical reports for insurance or legal purposes in the patient's home country.

Hotel visits. For international visitors staying at London hotels, our doctors can attend at your hotel for a home visit. We regularly attend patients at hotels across Mayfair, Knightsbridge, Kensington, and central London. Hotel visits within zones 1 and 2 start from £495.

Coordination with home doctors. If you have a treating physician in your home country, we can coordinate with them. We provide English-language medical letters summarising consultations and treatment in London, which can be shared with your doctor at home.

Culturally sensitive healthcare

We understand that for many Arabic-speaking patients and families from the Middle East, certain aspects of healthcare carry cultural weight that goes beyond clinical practice.

Confidentiality. All consultations are strictly confidential. We never share medical information with anyone, including family members, employers, or embassies, without the patient's explicit written consent. This applies to all patients, but we recognise that for some Arabic-speaking patients, particularly around mental health, reproductive health, and certain lifestyle-related conditions, the assurance of confidentiality is especially important.

Family involvement. Many patients from Middle Eastern cultures prefer to have a family member present during consultations. This is entirely welcome, with the patient's consent. The doctor will address the patient directly but can include family members in the discussion.

Gender preferences. If a patient has a preference for a male or female doctor, we will do our best to accommodate this. Please mention your preference when booking.

Mental health. We recognise that mental health carries particular stigma in some Arabic-speaking communities. Our Arabic-speaking doctors are experienced in discussing mental health sensitively, normalising the conversation, and providing support without judgment. Anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout are medical conditions that deserve proper care, and seeking help is a sign of strength.

Children's health. For families with children, our doctors provide paediatric consultations in Arabic. A parent or guardian must be present for patients under 16.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be registered with an NHS GP to see you? No. You do not need NHS registration. The Online GP is a private service open to anyone, including international visitors with no UK residency.

Can the doctor write prescriptions that I can use in my home country? UK private prescriptions are for use in UK pharmacies. If you need medication to take home, the doctor can prescribe it for dispensing at a UK pharmacy before you travel. The doctor can also write a medical letter describing your treatment that your home doctor can use to issue a local prescription.

Do you accept health insurance from Gulf countries? We provide receipts and documentation that can be submitted to your insurer for reimbursement. We do not currently bill Gulf-based insurers directly, but most patients claim successfully with the documentation we provide.

Can I bring a family member to translate? You are welcome to bring a family member, but with Arabic-speaking doctors available, professional translation is usually unnecessary. For languages other than Arabic, English, Spanish, French, or Dutch, a professional interpreter can be arranged.
