Prescriptions and treatment during a London doctor home visit: what to arrange

A well-planned doctor home visit gives you time to explain the problem, be examined and understand your options without travelling to a clinic. A prescription or treatment may follow when clinically appropriate. The decision comes from the assessment, and the exact medicines, equipment and professional needed must be confirmed rather than assumed.

What can the doctor assess during a visit?

The doctor can take a history and perform an examination suited to the concern and available setting. Tell the team what you need before booking, including the patient's age, symptoms, relevant conditions and access to your address. This helps establish whether a home appointment is suitable and which professional should attend.

A home visit is an assessment, not a guaranteed diagnosis or a promise that every condition can be treated there. If examination suggests a need for hospital assessment, imaging or another specialist service, the plan should explain that next step. Convenience should support good care, not replace it.

Can a visiting doctor issue a prescription?

A doctor may prescribe after obtaining enough reliable information to make a safe decision. The GMC prescribing standards apply across settings, including face-to-face and remote care. The prescriber considers the history, relevant examination, other medicines, allergies, risks and monitoring requirements.

Bring the medicine packaging or an accurate list, and any useful letters from your usual clinician. A previous prescription, including one issued abroad, is helpful information but does not oblige a UK doctor to repeat it. Antibiotics and other medicines are prescribed for an appropriate indication, not because they were requested in advance.

Does a prescription mean medicine is immediately available?

No. Issuing a prescription, dispensing a medicine and delivering it are different steps. Ask how you would obtain medication and whether collection or delivery can be arranged. Pharmacy stock, opening hours, dispensing checks and delivery charges may affect the practical plan.

The home-visit quote should distinguish the consultation from any medication and delivery costs. If a medicine is time-sensitive, say so at the first enquiry. Do not assume that every visiting doctor brings a supply of the medicine that might eventually be prescribed.

Tell The Wellness team your location and what you need. The team will confirm the available service, timing and complete quote before booking.

Can treatment be administered at home?

Some treatment can be given in a home setting when the indication, professional competence, equipment, medicine supply and monitoring arrangements are appropriate. The possibility of an injection or infusion is not confirmation that it is offered by every doctor or can be added during an ordinary consultation.

Discuss the intended treatment before booking so the team can assess what can be arranged. The clinician should explain the purpose, alternatives, expected benefit, important risks and aftercare. Consent and a clear plan matter just as much in a sitting room as in a clinic.

How do blood tests and follow-up fit in?

The doctor may recommend investigation if it would help answer the clinical question. Ask whether blood sampling at the visit can be arranged, which laboratory will handle it and who will review the result. More testing is not automatically better care.

Before the appointment ends, understand what to do if symptoms do not improve, who will communicate any results and whether another review is included or charged separately. If you are staying in a hotel, agree how the plan and any necessary records can reach you after departure.

What does a carefully arranged London home visit cost?

At the upper end of London's published visiting-doctor market, Knightsbridge Doctors lists £600 for a daytime home visit, £800 for an evening visit between 5pm and 10pm, and £1,000 for a night or weekend visit by arrangement. Its fee structure adds charges according to the tests performed. These are that practice's published prices, not The Wellness fees, not a market-wide maximum and not evidence of a better clinical outcome.

Compare the complete service rather than a headline call-out price. Ask about clinician time, travel, tests, laboratory charges, medication, treatment attendance and follow-up. A more expensive visit is not automatically more useful, and a low headline fee may exclude things you need. The Wellness provides an individual quote after the enquiry has been assessed; availability, equipment and the appropriate clinician need confirming for your request.

How can I arrange the next step?

Contact The Online GP, part of The Wellness, with your London postcode or hotel address, the patient's age, a short description of the concern and your preferred time. Tell the team if you are leaving London soon, need help collecting medication or already have relevant reports. Do not send unnecessary identity documents or medical records before the team explains the appropriate secure route.

You can also email the team or call 020 3951 3429. An enquiry does not reserve a doctor or guarantee a procedure. Confirm the complete fee and the plan before paying. For severe breathing difficulty, stroke symptoms, severe chest pain or another medical emergency, call 999 rather than wait for a private visit.
