What Is an Echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart. It uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time moving images of the heart's chambers, valves, walls and major blood vessels. It is non-invasive, painless and requires no preparation beyond removing clothing covering the chest. A standard transthoracic echocardiogram takes 20 to 45 minutes.
The scan assesses heart muscle thickness, chamber size, valve structure and function, pumping efficiency (ejection fraction) and blood flow direction (Doppler). It is the single most useful imaging investigation in cardiology after an ECG and is the standard test for assessing structural heart disease.
When Is an Echocardiogram Needed?
A private echocardiogram is appropriate in several common scenarios.
Symptoms suggestive of cardiac disease. Breathlessness on exertion, chest pain or pressure, palpitations, light-headedness, ankle swelling, fatigue out of proportion to activity, or syncope (fainting).
Murmur detected on clinical examination. An echocardiogram is the standard test to assess whether a heart murmur reflects valvular disease.
Family history of cardiomyopathy or sudden cardiac death. Particularly important in first-degree relatives of those with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy or unexplained sudden cardiac death.
Hypertension or known coronary artery disease. To assess for left ventricular hypertrophy, diastolic dysfunction or wall motion abnormalities.
Pre-participation screening for athletes. Particularly endurance athletes over 35 and competitive athletes at any age with family history.
Routine executive health screening. As part of a comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment.
How Is an Echocardiogram Different from an ECG?
An ECG (electrocardiogram) records the electrical activity of the heart and detects rhythm disturbances, conduction abnormalities and signs of prior infarction. It takes 5 to 10 minutes. It does not visualise heart structure.
An echocardiogram (ultrasound) visualises the heart structurally and dynamically. It shows the size of each chamber, the thickness of the muscle, the integrity of each valve and the efficiency of pumping. It does not detect electrical rhythm disturbances directly.
A comprehensive cardiac assessment requires both. The Heart Health Scan at The Online GP by The Wellness includes ECG, echocardiogram, carotid Doppler, AAA screen and bloods together for £2,495.

What Conditions Does an Echocardiogram Detect?
A standard transthoracic echocardiogram is the diagnostic gold standard or a key investigation for the following conditions.
Heart valve disease including aortic stenosis, mitral regurgitation, aortic regurgitation and mitral stenosis. Heart failure, both with reduced and preserved ejection fraction. Cardiomyopathies including hypertrophic, dilated and restrictive. Pericardial disease including pericardial effusion. Left ventricular hypertrophy from chronic hypertension. Congenital heart disease in adults. Intracardiac thrombus. Tumours and masses. Pulmonary hypertension (indirectly through right heart and tricuspid regurgitation assessment).
Findings on echocardiogram directly change management in many cases. For example, severe asymptomatic aortic stenosis may indicate the need for valve replacement. Reduced ejection fraction triggers heart failure medication. Left ventricular hypertrophy reinforces the need for tighter blood pressure control.
How Much Does a Private Echocardiogram Cost in London?
A private standalone echocardiogram in London ranges from approximately £250 at high-street imaging chains through to £900 plus at consultant-led Harley Street clinics. At The Online GP by The Wellness, a private echocardiogram is available standalone from £795 or bundled within the Heart Health Scan (£2,495) or Executive Body Scan (£4,995).
The £795 standalone price reflects doctor-performed delivery with same-day interpretation and consultation, rather than sonographer-performed with separate consultant report turned around days later. For comprehensive cardiovascular assessment, the Heart Health Scan is materially better value at £2,495 because it adds carotid Doppler, AAA screening, ECG and cardiometabolic bloods that together transform the depth of the assessment.
What Happens on the Day?
You are greeted privately. Medical history and symptoms are reviewed. You are asked to remove clothing covering the chest and to lie on the examination couch on your left side. Three small ECG electrodes are placed on the chest. Conductive gel is applied to a hand-held probe (transducer) which is moved across the chest in several positions. The scan takes 20 to 45 minutes.
The doctor performs the scan and interprets findings in real time. Images are recorded and reviewed at the end of the scan. Findings are explained to you immediately, with a written report provided. If bloods are included in the package, results follow within 24 to 48 hours with a follow-up consultation included.

Is the Scan Safe and Are There Any Risks?
A transthoracic echocardiogram is completely safe. It uses no radiation and no contrast injection. The only sensation is the cool conductive gel and the pressure of the probe on the chest. There are no contraindications. Pregnant women, children and adults of any age can undergo the test.
A transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE), in which the probe is passed down the oesophagus under sedation, is a separate investigation with different indications and is performed in a hospital setting. The Online GP by The Wellness performs transthoracic echocardiograms only.
What If the Scan Finds Something Abnormal?
Most echocardiograms either confirm normal structure and function (providing strong reassurance) or detect findings that are mild and require monitoring rather than intervention. Where significant findings are identified, the doctor explains them, places them in context of your symptoms and risk profile, and arranges onward referral to a consultant cardiologist as appropriate.
The Online GP by The Wellness has established referral pathways into private cardiology and cardiac surgery for any findings requiring specialist input.
Why Choose The Online GP by The Wellness for a Private Echocardiogram?

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a private echocardiogram cost?
Available standalone from £795 at The Online GP by The Wellness, or bundled within the Heart Health Scan (£2,495) or Executive Body Scan (£4,995). The £795 standalone price reflects doctor-performed delivery with same-day interpretation.
What is the difference between an echocardiogram and an ECG?
An ECG records the electrical activity of the heart and detects rhythm and conduction abnormalities. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound that visualises heart structure, valves and pumping efficiency. A comprehensive cardiac check needs both.
How long does an echocardiogram take?
A standard transthoracic echocardiogram takes 20 to 45 minutes. Findings are explained immediately in the same visit.
Is an echocardiogram safe?
Yes. A transthoracic echocardiogram uses no radiation and no contrast injection. There are no contraindications. Safe for adults of any age and during pregnancy.
Do I need a referral for a private echocardiogram?
No. The Online GP by The Wellness is a fully private clinic. No NHS GP referral or registration required. Book directly via WhatsApp, email or phone.
When should I have an echocardiogram?
If you have breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations, ankle swelling, a heart murmur, family history of cardiomyopathy, hypertension, or as part of executive health screening. Athletes over 35 also benefit from periodic cardiac screening.
What if my echocardiogram is abnormal?
Most findings are mild or require only monitoring. Where significant, the doctor explains findings, places them in context and arranges referral to a consultant cardiologist as appropriate. We have established private referral pathways.
