Why Families Choose a Private GP

Parents instinctively know when their child needs a doctor. The frustration of being unable to get a timely NHS appointment when your child is feverish, in pain, or visibly unwell is one of the most common reasons families turn to private GP services.

Children's conditions can change rapidly. An ear infection that is manageable in the morning can leave a child screaming in pain by evening. A rash that appears at lunchtime may need assessment before it spreads. A persistent cough that is keeping the entire household awake needs investigation, not a "call back in two weeks" response. Same-day access to a doctor who can assess, diagnose, and treat means your child gets better faster and your family's routine is disrupted as little as possible.

Beyond acute illness, families also use our services for vaccination catch-ups (ensuring no gap in their child's immunisation schedule), travel health (pre-holiday vaccinations and health advice for travelling with children), school-required medical documentation, second opinions on diagnoses or treatment plans, and ongoing management of childhood conditions such as eczema, asthma, and allergies.

Common Childhood Conditions We See

Our doctors are experienced in assessing and treating the full range of conditions that bring children to the GP.

Ear infections (otitis media). One of the most common childhood illnesses, causing ear pain, fever, and irritability. Most cases are viral and resolve without antibiotics, but your doctor will assess whether bacterial infection is likely and prescribe antibiotics if clinically indicated. Same-day assessment means your child is not suffering unnecessarily while waiting for an appointment.

Sore throats and tonsillitis. Assessing whether a sore throat is viral (most common) or bacterial (requiring antibiotics) requires examination. Your doctor will use clinical criteria (such as the Centor or FeverPAIN score) to make an evidence-based decision.

Coughs and chest infections. Persistent or worsening coughs, wheeze, and fever may indicate a chest infection requiring treatment. Your doctor will listen to your child's chest, assess their breathing, and determine whether antibiotics, inhalers, or further investigation are needed.

Rashes and skin conditions. Childhood rashes range from completely benign to potentially serious. Impetigo, eczema flares, viral rashes, allergic reactions, and fungal infections all require different management. If you are concerned about a new or changing rash, same-day assessment provides answers.

Fever. Fever is common in childhood and is usually caused by self-limiting viral infections. However, fever can also indicate more serious conditions, particularly in very young children. Your doctor will assess your child, identify the likely cause, and advise on management. For any child under 3 months with a fever of 38 degrees or above, go to A&E immediately.

Stomach bugs. Vomiting and diarrhoea are common in children and usually resolve within a few days. Your doctor can assess hydration status, rule out more serious causes, and advise on fluid management. Prescriptions for anti-nausea medication or oral rehydration solutions can be issued if needed.

Asthma. Asthma reviews, inhaler technique assessment, medication adjustment, and management plans. If your child's asthma is not well controlled, a thorough private consultation with more time than the NHS can offer may identify improvements.

Allergies. Assessment of suspected food allergies, environmental allergies, and allergic reactions. Blood testing for specific allergens is available at our clinic.

Behavioural and developmental concerns. If you are concerned about your child's development, behaviour, attention, or learning, our doctors can provide an initial assessment and refer to appropriate specialists (paediatric developmental assessment, child psychology, educational psychology) if further evaluation is needed.

Vaccinations for Children

Keeping your child's vaccinations up to date is one of the most important things you can do for their health. Our doctors can review your child's red book (Personal Child Health Record), identify any missed or overdue vaccines, and administer catch-up doses at the same appointment.

We offer catch-up doses for any missed NHS schedule vaccines, meningitis B and MenACWY (particularly important in light of the 2026 Kent outbreak, especially for teenagers approaching university age), HPV vaccination, flu vaccination, travel vaccines for families planning international trips (hepatitis A, typhoid, and others depending on destination), and any additional vaccines recommended for your child's specific circumstances.

For international families, your child's home country vaccination schedule may differ from the UK schedule. Our doctors can cross-reference both and advise on any additional vaccines recommended for your child's protection while in the UK.

The Whole Family in One Clinic

The Online GP by The Wellness is not a paediatric-only service. We provide comprehensive GP care for patients of every age. This means your entire family, from your youngest child to your grandparents, can be seen at the same clinic, by doctors who know your family's medical history.

Parents can combine their own consultation (blood tests, health check, prescription renewal, vaccination) with their child's appointment in a single visit. This is more efficient than managing separate GP relationships for different family members and ensures coordinated care across the household.
