Ezra, acquired by Function Health in May 2025, opened London as its first international site and expanded across the UK in January 2026 with sites including Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow, cutting scan time to 22 minutes using FDA-cleared AI and pricing from 499 US dollars for the base protocol up to 3,999 for versions adding skeletal and neurological assessment. Prenuvo, the best-known name in the category, operates in London in the low thousands. Both read scans with consultant radiologists and both report findings through their own systems. So the question is not whether the technology is real. It is whether scanning an asymptomatic person head to toe improves what happens to them, and the honest answer from the evidence is that it has not been shown to. A systematic review of whole-body MRI screening in asymptomatic people covering 12 studies and 5,373 participants found no demonstrated improvement in outcomes, while incidental findings were common and led to further scans, biopsies and anxiety, a pattern the Royal College of Radiologists has warned about for years. That does not make the scan useless. It makes it a tool with a narrow correct use, and the people it helps are identifiable in advance. Who a whole-body MRI actually helps
A confirmed BRCA1 or BRCA2 carrier, or someone with Lynch syndrome, where surveillance imaging is part of an evidence-based programme rather than a consumer purchase. A person with a strong family history of cancer across multiple relatives, particularly at young ages, where the pre-test probability is meaningfully raised. Someone under formal surveillance after a previous cancer, where the protocol is set by an oncology team. And occasionally a person with an unexplained clinical picture where broad imaging is a reasonable next step after a proper assessment.
For those people, whole-body MRI is a serious tool, we arrange it, and we say so plainly.
What unites them is a raised prior probability of finding something. That is the entire principle behind whether any screening test helps or harms, because the same scan applied to a population at low risk produces mostly false alarms, and the person paying carries the cost of investigating every one of them.
What incidental findings actually cost you
The number people underestimate is how often a whole-body scan finds something. Small kidney and liver lesions, thyroid nodules, adrenal adenomas, spinal degeneration, benign cysts. The overwhelming majority are harmless, but harmless is a conclusion reached after investigation rather than before it.
Each finding then produces a decision. Repeat imaging in 3 or 6 months. A specialist referral. Occasionally a biopsy carrying its own risk. Sometimes a lifetime of interval scans for something that was never going to hurt you. That cascade is a real cost in money, radiation where CT enters the picture, procedural risk and sustained anxiety, and it falls hardest on people who bought the scan for reassurance.
The counterweight is real too, since a scan occasionally finds an early cancer or an aneurysm and changes a life. Both things are true. The gap in the scan-first model, and how we close it
Buying a scan directly gives you an image and a report. What it does not give you is the assessment that should have preceded it, and the pathway that should follow it. Nobody takes your family history to establish whether you are in the group the scan helps. Nobody examines you. Results arrive through the provider’s own system, and published accounts describe waits of 7 to 10 working days. When a finding needs acting on, you are the one converting a report into a UK referral.
