IV therapy in London, What it costs, and what vitamin drips can actually do

Sep 3

IV therapy has become one of the most visible wellness treatments in London, and also one of the easiest to overstate. The underlying principle is fairly straightforward: nutrients and fluids taken by mouth have to pass through the digestive system before entering the circulation, and the amount absorbed varies according to the nutrient, the dose and the individual. Intravenous administration bypasses the gastrointestinal tract and delivers fluids and nutrients directly into the bloodstream.

That makes IV therapy a rapid route for providing hydration and selected nutrients. What it does not do is replace a balanced diet, diagnose or treat the underlying cause of persistent symptoms, or make every vitamin more beneficial simply because it is given intravenously. The more useful question is therefore not whether IV therapy “works” in the abstract, but what is being administered, why it is being given, whether it is appropriate for the individual and what someone is realistically expecting it to achieve.

At The Wellness, IV therapy is physician-supervised, with sessions from £325. Fees appear further down this page. Reviewed by the medical team at The Wellness. Last updated September 2026.

What IV therapy is actually doing

When a nutrient is swallowed, it first has to be absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. How much ultimately reaches the circulation depends on factors including the nutrient itself, the dose, gastrointestinal function and the body's mechanisms for regulating absorption. Vitamin C is one example: the proportion absorbed falls as oral doses increase because intestinal absorption becomes less efficient at higher doses. Vitamin B12 is another, with normal dietary absorption depending heavily on intrinsic factor and specialised absorption in the terminal ileum, although a small proportion of larger oral doses can also be absorbed independently of this mechanism.

Intravenous administration bypasses those gastrointestinal limitations and delivers the chosen dose directly into the circulation. The same principle applies to fluid. An IV infusion provides a measured quantity of fluid intravenously rather than relying on gastrointestinal absorption, which can be useful when relatively rapid fluid replacement is appropriate.

Faster delivery, however, should not automatically be confused with greater long-term benefit. Someone who is already adequately hydrated, eating normally and has no relevant nutrient deficiency may not gain a meaningful clinical advantage simply because vitamins are delivered intravenously rather than obtained through food or appropriate oral supplementation. This is why the indication for the treatment matters more than the route alone.

What the different IV formulas are designed to support

Hydration-focused infusions are perhaps the most straightforward form of IV therapy. They use intravenous fluid with selected electrolytes and are primarily intended to provide relatively rapid fluid replacement, for example where dehydration, travel or physical exertion has increased fluid requirements. The intention is hydration and electrolyte replacement rather than treatment of an underlying illness.

Myer's Cocktail is one of the best-known wellness IV formulations and typically combines ingredients such as vitamin C, B vitamins and magnesium. It is generally offered as a supportive wellness treatment alongside normal nutrition rather than as a replacement for a healthy diet or medical care. Energy-focused formulations use higher concentrations of B vitamins, including B12, which have established roles in normal cellular energy metabolism. That does not mean, however, that an energy drip should be used as a substitute for investigating unexplained fatigue. Persistent tiredness can have numerous causes, including iron deficiency, thyroid disease, sleep disorders and other medical conditions.

Recovery-focused formulations combine fluids with ingredients such as electrolytes, amino acids and antioxidants and are generally intended to support hydration and nutrient replenishment following exertion. They should complement rather than replace adequate sleep, nutrition, recovery time or appropriate medical treatment after illness or injury.

Beauty-focused formulations commonly include nutrients and antioxidants such as vitamin C, zinc, biotin and glutathione. Some of these nutrients have established biological roles in processes relevant to skin health, antioxidant defence and collagen production, but an IV infusion should not be regarded as a stand-alone treatment for skin disease or as a guaranteed cosmetic intervention.

NAD+ infusions contain nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a coenzyme involved in cellular metabolism and energy production. NAD biology has attracted significant interest in ageing and longevity research, although many of the broader anti-ageing claims surrounding commercial NAD+ therapy remain an emerging area rather than established clinical medicine. NAD+ is also generally infused more slowly than a straightforward hydration drip because rapid administration can be uncomfortable.

The common principle across all of these treatments is that an IV formula should have a defined purpose. The most appropriate infusion is not necessarily the one with the longest ingredient list, but the one that makes sense for the individual receiving it.

When IV therapy may not be appropriate

Because intravenous therapy delivers fluid, electrolytes and other ingredients directly into the circulation, there are circumstances in which it may not be suitable. People with significant kidney disease, for example, may have difficulty handling additional fluid, electrolytes or certain minerals appropriately. Some people with heart conditions also require careful fluid management, meaning an unnecessary intravenous fluid load may not be appropriate.

Allergies, current medication and underlying medical conditions can also influence which ingredients are suitable, while pregnancy introduces additional considerations that should be discussed with an appropriate clinician before elective IV therapy. There are also risks associated with the intravenous route itself, including bruising, irritation and infection, as well as less common complications relating to the cannula or infusion.

This is why screening before treatment matters. A brief clinical assessment should establish what is being administered, whether there is any reason it should not be given and whether the symptoms someone is describing would actually be better addressed through medical investigation rather than an infusion.

What IV therapy cannot replace

IV therapy is not a substitute for investigating persistent symptoms. Someone who has experienced unexplained fatigue for several weeks, for example, may gain considerably more from understanding why they are tired than from repeatedly receiving an energy infusion. Depending on the clinical picture, appropriate assessment might include consideration of full blood count, iron studies, thyroid function, vitamin status, glucose regulation, inflammatory markers, sleep, medication and other possible causes.

The same principle applies to persistent brain fog, weakness, low mood or recurrent illness. An infusion can provide fluid and selected nutrients, but it cannot determine why a symptom is happening, and it should not delay appropriate assessment where symptoms are persistent or concerning.

IV therapy should not replace a balanced diet either. For most people, food remains the appropriate source of the majority of vitamins, minerals, protein and other nutrients required over the long term. The most defensible role for IV therapy is therefore as a supportive intervention for a defined purpose, after appropriate screening, rather than as a general treatment for simply feeling tired or unwell.

What IV therapy costs at The Wellness

Private IV therapy prices in London vary considerably. Basic hydration services can begin in the low hundreds of pounds, while more complex formulations and NAD+ infusions may cost several hundred pounds. Some concierge and membership-based medical services also incorporate IV treatments into broader annual packages costing considerably more. At The Wellness, each infusion is preceded by appropriate health screening and delivered with medical oversight.

Hydration Plus is £225 and combines isotonic fluid with electrolytes, magnesium and calcium. Energy Support is £250 and uses a higher-dose B-vitamin formulation designed to support normal cellular energy metabolism, while Myer's Cocktail is £285 and combines vitamin C, B vitamins, magnesium and other nutrients as a broader wellness formulation.

Recovery Support is £350 and combines amino acids, electrolytes and antioxidants for post-exertion hydration and nutrient replenishment. Beauty Glow is £375 and contains nutrients and antioxidants associated with normal collagen production and cellular health. NAD+ Therapy is £600 for a 500 mg NAD+ infusion with B vitamins, while Apex Performance is £1,275 and is the most comprehensive formulation, combining B vitamins, amino acids, glutathione, vitamin C, magnesium and zinc.

A health screening reviewing medical history and current medication is included before a first infusion to assess whether treatment and the selected formula are appropriate. Sessions generally last around 45 to 90 minutes depending on the formulation and are available at the clinic in Marylebone, with mobile IV therapy also available across London.

Why medical supervision matters

IV therapy is often marketed as a straightforward wellness treatment, but it is still an intravenous medical procedure. The value of clinical oversight is not simply having someone available while the infusion is running. It begins with deciding whether the treatment is appropriate in the first place, checking medical history and medication, selecting an appropriate formulation and recognising when the symptoms someone describes warrant investigation rather than another infusion.

At The Wellness, every infusion is overseen by a GMC-registered doctor, with health screening before the first session. If persistent fatigue, recurrent illness or another symptom suggests that blood testing or a medical consultation would be more appropriate, the aim is to identify that rather than treat every presentation with the same drip.

Frequently asked questions

How much does IV therapy cost in London?

At The Wellness, IV therapy starts from £225 for Hydration Plus. Myer's Cocktail is £285, Energy Support is £250, Recovery Support is £350 and Beauty Glow is £375. NAD+ Therapy is £600, while the more comprehensive Apex Performance infusion is £1,275.

Is IV therapy safe?

IV therapy can be administered safely when appropriate clinical screening, sterile technique and trained medical professionals are involved. As with any intravenous treatment, however, it is not entirely risk-free. Potential complications include bruising, irritation and infection, and some medical conditions may make particular fluids or ingredients unsuitable. This is why health screening is completed before treatment.

Can IV therapy treat fatigue or low energy?

An infusion containing B vitamins or other nutrients may support normal energy metabolism or correct relevant nutrient deficiencies, but persistent fatigue should not simply be assumed to result from low vitamin levels. Ongoing tiredness may warrant medical assessment for causes including iron deficiency, thyroid problems, sleep disorders and other conditions.

Who should not have IV therapy?

People with significant kidney disease, certain heart conditions, specific allergies or other conditions affecting fluid and electrolyte balance may not be suitable for some IV treatments. Pregnancy also requires additional consideration. Suitability should therefore be assessed individually rather than assuming that the same infusion is appropriate for everyone.

How often should I have IV therapy?

There is no universal schedule that is appropriate for everyone. Frequency should depend on why the infusion is being used, the formulation and the individual's medical circumstances. Repeated IV treatment should not be used to mask an ongoing symptom that would be better investigated medically.

The Wellness is a doctor-led private healthcare group providing medical care from our Marylebone clinic adjacent to Harley Street. All doctors are GMC-registered and every infusion is physician-supervised. IV therapy is a supportive treatment and is not a substitute for investigation or treatment of underlying medical conditions. This article provides general information and is not a substitute for individual medical advice.
