Private Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in London: Shoulder, Knee, and Sports Injury Scans
Joint pain, sports injuries, and musculoskeletal problems are among the most common reasons people seek medical help — and one of the areas where NHS waiting times are longest. A routine MSK ultrasound on the NHS can take 4-8 weeks, and orthopaedic referrals often stretch to months. If you have a shoulder injury preventing you from working, a knee problem stopping you from training, or persistent pain that needs answers, waiting is not just frustrating — it delays your recovery.
The Online GP by The Wellness offers same-day private musculoskeletal ultrasound from £195. Expert sonographers with MSK specialisation, dynamic scanning (real-time assessment while you move the joint), and same-day results with GP-coordinated follow-up.

What MSK Ultrasound Can Assess
Shoulder
The shoulder is the joint most commonly scanned by MSK ultrasound. It is the investigation of choice for rotator cuff pathology — the group of tendons and muscles that stabilise the shoulder. Ultrasound can identify rotator cuff tears (partial and complete), supraspinatus tendinopathy, subacromial bursitis, biceps tendon pathology (tendinopathy, subluxation, tear), frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) signs, acromioclavicular joint arthritis, and calcific tendinopathy.
Dynamic scanning — where the sonographer examines the shoulder while you move it through specific positions — is a significant advantage of ultrasound over MRI, which captures only static images.
Knee
Knee ultrasound is valuable for assessing superficial structures including quadriceps and patellar tendon pathology, Baker's cysts (popliteal cysts behind the knee), collateral ligament injuries, joint effusion (fluid in the joint), bursitis (prepatellar, infrapatellar), and iliotibial band syndrome.
For deep internal structures — cruciate ligaments (ACL, PCL) and meniscal tears — MRI is generally the preferred investigation. Our team can advise which imaging is most appropriate and arrange MRI referral if needed.
Ankle and Foot
Ankle and foot ultrasound is excellent for Achilles tendon injuries (tendinopathy, partial tears, complete rupture), peroneal tendon pathology, plantar fasciitis (one of the most common causes of heel pain), ligament injuries following ankle sprains, Morton's neuroma, and ankle joint effusion.
Hip
Hip ultrasound can identify trochanteric bursitis, gluteal tendinopathy, hip joint effusion, iliopsoas pathology, and labral abnormalities (though MRI with arthrogram is often superior for labral assessment).
Wrist, Hand, Elbow
Upper limb MSK ultrasound is commonly performed for lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow), carpal tunnel syndrome (median nerve assessment), de Quervain's tenosynovitis, trigger finger, ganglion cysts, and tendon injuries in the hand and wrist.

Why MSK Ultrasound Is Often Better Than MRI
MSK ultrasound has several advantages over MRI for musculoskeletal assessment. It is faster — scans take 15-20 minutes compared to 30-60 minutes for MRI. It is immediately available — same-day booking versus weeks of waiting for MRI. It allows dynamic assessment — the sonographer can watch tendons and muscles move in real time. It is more comfortable — no enclosed scanner, no noise, no claustrophobia. It is more affordable — £195 versus £400-800+ for a private MRI. And results are available immediately rather than days later.
MRI remains superior for certain conditions, particularly deep joint structures, bone marrow pathology, and complex soft tissue masses. Our doctors can advise which investigation your specific injury requires.
From Diagnosis to Recovery
At The Online GP, your MSK ultrasound is the starting point, not the end point. Once we identify the problem, our team coordinates your recovery. This may include physiotherapy referral, anti-inflammatory medication, activity modification advice, ultrasound-guided injection referral (for conditions that benefit from targeted corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid, or PRP injection), orthopaedic surgeon referral (for conditions requiring surgical consideration), and sports medicine specialist referral.
Having your diagnosis, treatment, and referrals managed from one point of contact means faster recovery and less time navigating the system.
