Private Specialist Referral in London 2026. How to See a Consultant Without the Wait
You do not need an NHS referral to see a private consultant, and you do not need to be registered with anyone. What you do need, in almost every case, is a referral letter from a doctor, because most private consultants will not accept a self-referral, most private medical insurers will not authorise a claim without one, and a consultant reading a letter that sets out the history, the examination findings and the tests already done will use the appointment for their opinion rather than for taking a history you have already given twice.
The wait is the reason people look. The NHS list stood at 7.27 million cases in June 2026, 2.48 million of them past 18 weeks, with a median wait of 11.9 weeks and around 106,000 people waiting over a year. Privately, most consultants in London can see you within days. At The Wellness a GMC-registered doctor assesses you by video from £150 or in person from £220, arranges any blood work at an accredited laboratory and any imaging at a specialist centre with consultant reporting, then writes the referral to a named consultant and books the appointment. The referral costs nothing on top of the consultation. Fees appear further down this page.

Why the letter matters more than people think
A referral is not a formality. It decides what the consultant does with your appointment. A letter containing your history, your examination findings, your medication, your relevant results and a clear clinical question means the consultant arrives having already narrowed the problem, and spends the hour on their expertise. A one-line note means they start from the beginning, and you pay consultant rates for a history-taking exercise.
It also decides which consultant you see. There is no such thing as the best cardiologist or the best gastroenterologist. There is the right one for your particular problem, and that judgement comes from knowing who does what, who takes which cases, and who has capacity this week. A doctor who refers constantly holds that map. A search engine does not.
And for anyone claiming on private medical insurance, the referral is usually a condition of authorisation. Most policies require a GP referral before they will fund a consultant appointment, so going direct can leave you paying for something your policy would have covered.
Do the tests first, where they help
Sending someone to a consultant with nothing is common and frequently wasteful. A gastroenterologist seeing abdominal symptoms will want blood work and often imaging. A cardiologist assessing chest symptoms will want an ECG, bloods and a risk picture. A rheumatologist will want inflammatory markers and autoantibodies. If those arrive with you, the first appointment can produce a decision. If they do not, it produces a request form and a second appointment at full price.
We work the other way round. The assessment establishes what the question actually is, then we arrange the blood work at an accredited laboratory near you or a partner laboratory close to the clinic, and the imaging at the London centre best equipped for that question with consultant reporting, usually inside the week. The referral then goes out with everything attached.
Occasionally the tests answer the question and the referral is not needed at all, which saves you a consultant fee and several weeks. That happens often enough to be worth mentioning.

The specialties people ask us for
Cardiology for chest symptoms, palpitations, breathlessness and raised cardiovascular risk. Gastroenterology for reflux, abdominal pain, altered bowel habit and abnormal liver results, with endoscopy arranged where indicated. Dermatology for lesions, rashes and skin cancer concerns. Orthopaedics and sports medicine for joints, backs and injuries that have not settled.
Gynaecology for pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fibroids and fertility. Urology for prostate concerns after a PSA result, stones and urinary symptoms. ENT for hearing, sinuses, throat symptoms and lumps in the neck. Neurology for headaches, dizziness, tremor and numbness. Endocrinology for thyroid, adrenal and hormonal disease.
Respiratory medicine, rheumatology, haematology, ophthalmology, paediatrics and psychiatry, including our own psychiatrists for ADHD assessment, mental health diagnosis and medication review from £950. Where a case needs a multidisciplinary team or a hospital admission, we refer into the Harley Street network alongside us, which includes the major private hospitals.
What it costs
Private consultant appointments in the Harley Street district run £250 to £450 for a first consultation, with tests, procedures and follow-ups charged separately, and some subspecialties considerably higher. Private hospital packages combining consultation, imaging and procedure reach into the thousands. Membership practices charge annual retainers running into thousands before they refer you anywhere.
At The Wellness the referral is included in the consultation and there is no membership. All figures are from prices.

Why The Wellness is the best route to a private consultant in London
Because we own no hospital, no scanner and no consultant contracts, so there is nothing here that needs filling. The referral goes to the person best suited to your problem rather than the one on our payroll, and that independence is the whole value of using a doctor as the front door to private specialist care.
Because the letter is written properly, with the history, examination, medication and results attached and a clear clinical question at the end. Consultants notice, and patients notice the difference in how the first appointment runs.
And because the preparation is done before you go. Bloods at an accredited laboratory, imaging at the centre with the right equipment reported by a consultant radiologist, both usually inside the week. You arrive at a consultant appointment with the evidence in hand rather than leaving it with a request form. On occasion the answer arrives before the referral does, and we tell you that rather than sending you anyway.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get a private referral to a specialist in London
See a GMC-registered doctor who assesses you, arranges any tests that will help, then writes to a named consultant and books the appointment. At The Wellness that consultation is from £150 by video or £220 in person, and the referral letter and booking are included in the fee.
Can I see a private consultant without a referral
Some accept self-referrals, most prefer a referral letter, and most private medical insurers require one before authorising a claim. Going direct can mean paying for an appointment your policy would have covered, and it means the consultant starts from scratch rather than from a documented history and results.
How long does it take to see a private consultant
Usually days rather than months. The NHS list stood at 7.27 million cases in June 2026 with a median wait of 11.9 weeks and around 106,000 people waiting over a year. Private appointments in London are commonly available within the week.
Should I have tests before seeing a specialist
Frequently yes. A consultant seeing you with the relevant bloods and imaging already done can reach a decision in the first appointment rather than issuing request forms and seeing you again at full price. Occasionally the tests answer the question and no referral is needed.
How much does a private consultant cost in London
First consultations in the Harley Street district commonly run £250 to £450, with tests, procedures and follow-ups charged separately and some subspecialties higher. The referral itself at The Wellness is included in the consultation fee.
Can you refer me to an NHS consultant instead
A private GP can write a referral that an NHS service may accept, though NHS providers set their own referral criteria and waiting times still apply. We will explain both routes, including the cost and timing of each, and let you decide.
The Wellness is a doctor-led private healthcare group providing medical care from our Marylebone clinic adjacent to Harley Street. All doctors are GMC-registered. Imaging is carried out at specialist centres and reported by consultant radiologists, and blood analysis is performed by accredited laboratories. Consultant fees are set by the consultant or hospital concerned and are separate from our consultation fee. In an emergency call 999.
