Ran Out of Medication? How to Get an Emergency Prescription From a Private GP in London
Running out of essential medication is stressful — and it happens more often than people think. Your NHS GP can't see you for two weeks, your repeat prescription request is stuck in processing, you're travelling and forgot to pack your tablets, or you've recently moved and haven't registered with a new practice yet.
Whatever the reason, The Online GP by The Wellness provides same-day private prescriptions from GMC-registered doctors, from just £49. We see UK residents and international visitors, with no registration required.

When You Need an Emergency or Urgent Prescription
Several common situations lead people to need an urgent prescription, and knowing your options can save hours of anxiety.
Your NHS GP Can't See You
This is the most common situation for UK residents. NHS GP appointments are under unprecedented demand. You might be told the next available appointment is in 2-3 weeks, your online repeat prescription request hasn't been processed, or the surgery's phone lines are permanently engaged.
For essential medications — blood pressure tablets, thyroid medication, antidepressants, diabetes medication, contraception, inhalers — you can't wait that long.
Your options, in order:
Call your NHS GP and explain it's urgent. Ask specifically for an urgent repeat prescription — this doesn't always require an appointment. Some practices can authorise repeats by phone or online.
Ask a pharmacist for an emergency supply. UK pharmacists can provide an emergency supply of most prescription medicines for up to 30 days (5 days for controlled drugs like strong painkillers). They need to verify the medication is part of your regular treatment. There may be a small charge.
Call NHS 111. They can sometimes arrange a prescription through an out-of-hours GP service.
See a private GP. If the above options fail or are too slow, The Online GP can issue a private prescription the same day. This is particularly useful on evenings, weekends, and bank holidays when NHS options are limited.
You're Visiting the UK From Abroad
International visitors face a unique challenge: they have no NHS GP, no UK medical record, and often no idea how the UK healthcare system works.
The Online GP sees international visitors without registration. You don't need an NHS number, a UK address, or to be registered with any practice. Book a consultation, bring evidence of your current medication, and our doctor can prescribe the UK equivalent.
What to bring:
Your medication packaging (even an empty box with the label is helpful)
A prescription or letter from your home country doctor
A screenshot from your patient portal or pharmacy app
The medication name, dosage, and frequency — even handwritten
If your prescription is in another language, that's fine — our multilingual doctors can interpret it
You've Just Moved or Changed GP
Moving house in the UK means registering with a new NHS GP practice. This process can take days or weeks, and during the transition, your repeat prescriptions may be disrupted.
The Online GP can bridge this gap. A single private consultation can provide a prescription to cover the transition period while your new NHS registration is processed.
You Forgot or Lost Medication While Travelling
Whether you're travelling domestically or internationally, forgetting essential medication is a common and distressing problem. Airports, hotels, and long journeys all create opportunities for medications to be lost or left behind.
Book a video consultation with The Online GP from anywhere. If you're elsewhere in the UK or even abroad, our doctors can assess your needs via video call and issue a prescription. If you're in London, you can see us in person at our Marylebone clinic.
Don't wait until you've missed doses. WhatsApp us to arrange a same-day consultation for your prescription.
How The Online GP Prescription Process Works
Step 1: Contact us. Message us on WhatsApp, email team@thewellnesslondon.com, or call 020 3951 3429. Let us know which medication you need and we'll book you in for the earliest available slot — usually the same day.
Step 2: Consultation. A GMC-registered doctor will discuss your medical history, the medication you need, any side effects you've experienced, and whether the current dose remains appropriate. This is a proper medical consultation, not just a rubber stamp — our doctors have a duty of care to ensure any prescription is safe and appropriate for you.
Step 3: Private prescription issued. If the doctor is satisfied the prescription is appropriate, they will issue a private prescription. This is emailed to you as a PDF (for video consultations) or handed to you in person.
Step 4: Collect your medication. Take your prescription to any UK pharmacy to have it dispensed. The cost of the medication itself is separate from the consultation fee and depends on the specific drug.
What We Can and Cannot Prescribe
Our private GPs can prescribe a wide range of medications, including:
Cardiovascular: Blood pressure medications, statins, anticoagulants
Endocrine: Thyroid medication, diabetes medication (metformin, insulin etc.)
Respiratory: Inhalers, antihistamines
Contraception: Combined pill, progesterone-only pill, emergency contraception
Mental health: Antidepressants, anti-anxiety medication (for existing prescriptions)
Pain management: Standard analgesics (paracetamol, ibuprofen, co-codamol)
Antibiotics: Where clinically indicated
Skin conditions: Topical treatments, prescription creams
Gastrointestinal: Acid reflux medication, anti-nausea
Travel medication: Antimalarials, altitude sickness prevention
Limitations:
Controlled drugs (Schedule 2 and 3, such as strong opioids and certain sedatives) have additional restrictions. Our doctors will discuss alternatives if your medication falls into this category.
We will not prescribe without clinical justification. Our doctors prescribe based on medical need, not on request alone.
Some specialist medications may require a specialist consultation rather than a GP appointment. We can arrange this referral if needed.
The Pharmacy Emergency Supply Option
Before seeing a private GP, it's worth knowing that UK pharmacists have the authority to provide an emergency supply of prescription-only medicines in certain circumstances.
When a pharmacist can help:
You are taking a regular prescription medication and have run out
The pharmacist can verify it's part of your ongoing treatment
The medication is not a controlled drug requiring special prescription forms (though limited supplies may be possible)
There is an immediate need — you can't wait for a GP appointment
Limitations:
Not all pharmacists are willing or able to provide emergency supplies
Quantities are limited (usually up to 30 days, or 5 days for controlled drugs)
There is typically a charge
The pharmacist may not be able to help with all medications
They cannot initiate new prescriptions
If the pharmacy route doesn't work for you, The Online GP is your fastest alternative.
Preventing Prescription Emergencies
While we're always here to help in a crisis, a few practical steps can reduce the likelihood of running out of medication:
Order repeats early. Request your repeat prescription at least 7-10 days before you run out. Many NHS practices now have online ordering through the NHS App or patient portals.
Keep a medication list. Store a list of all your medications (name, dose, frequency) in your phone. This speeds up any consultation — NHS, private, or emergency.
Travel preparation. Before travelling, ensure you have enough medication for the entire trip plus a buffer for delays. Split supplies between hand luggage and hold luggage. Carry a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor.
Register your new GP promptly. If you move house, register with a new NHS GP practice immediately, even before you need an appointment.
The prescription is included in the consultation fee. Medication costs at the pharmacy are separate and vary by drug.
