Can a private GP write a medical letter in the UK?
Yes. Any GMC-registered doctor can issue medical letters and reports following a clinical assessment. Under GMC Good Medical Practice (paragraphs 63-65), doctors must be honest and objective in any document they prepare, and must not write or sign documents they believe to be misleading or untrue. A medical letter from a private GP carries the same weight as one from an NHS GP, provided the doctor has personally assessed the patient and is writing within the scope of their clinical competence.
The Online GP by The Wellness issues medical letters same-day in most cases following a video or telephone consultation. Complex reports may take one to three working days for thorough preparation.
Medical letters for employers
Employers request medical documentation across a range of workplace situations. The Online GP provides the following employer-facing letters, each issued after a genuine clinical consultation.
Fit notes (sick notes). Fit notes are issued following a clinical assessment if the doctor determines the patient's condition affects their fitness for work. Video consultations for fit note assessments start from £150. Telephone consultations from £49 may be appropriate for shorter-duration matters of less than one week. A fit note is never guaranteed and is always issued at the sole clinical discretion of the doctor. Full details are on our dedicated sick note page.
Fitness-for-work letters. Confirming a patient is medically fit to perform their role, or documenting any adjustments recommended. Often required when returning from extended sick leave, after surgery, or when starting a new position. The doctor assesses current condition against the demands of the role.
Reasonable adjustments letters. Under the Equality Act 2010, employers must consider reasonable adjustments for employees with disabilities or long-term health conditions. A medical letter from a GMC-registered doctor documenting the condition and recommended adjustments strengthens the employee's position. According to ACAS, employers who fail to make reasonable adjustments may face claims of disability discrimination.
Occupational health support letters. When an employer requests a medical opinion on a patient's ability to carry out specific duties, manage shift patterns, or work in particular environments. These letters address the employer's questions while respecting patient confidentiality.
Return-to-work medical clearance. Some employers require formal clearance before an employee resumes duties, particularly after surgery, serious illness, or mental health absence. The doctor assesses current fitness and provides a clear written statement.
The doctor will only include clinical information the patient consents to sharing. Patients have the right to see and approve any employer-facing letter before it is sent.

Medical letters for universities and schools
Academic institutions frequently require medical evidence. Timing is often critical during exam season and around coursework deadlines.
Mitigating circumstances letters. If illness has affected a student's ability to sit exams, submit coursework, or attend lectures, a detailed medical letter documenting the condition and its impact on academic function is essential. Universities expect letters that confirm the diagnosed condition, specify the dates affected, explain how the condition impaired academic performance, address severity, and provide the doctor's professional opinion on the likely impact. Our doctors regularly produce mitigating circumstances letters for students across UK universities and understand the level of detail that panels require.
Exam deferral letters. Supporting applications to defer examinations due to illness. These are time-sensitive and The Online GP can typically provide them same-day.
Extenuating circumstances for postgraduate and professional students. PhD students, medical students, law students, and those on other professional programmes often face higher documentation requirements for interruptions, extensions, or fitness-to-practise assessments. Our doctors provide letters addressing the specific academic and professional impact.
School absence letters. For parents who need medical evidence to explain prolonged absence from school, particularly where attendance monitoring has been triggered or where the local authority has raised concerns. Under the Education Act 1996, parents can be fined for unauthorised school absences. A medical letter documenting the child's illness provides formal evidence that the absence was genuine and unavoidable.
International student documentation. International students may face visa compliance requirements tied to academic engagement. A detailed medical letter documenting the reason for academic interruption is important for maintaining UKVI visa status.
All academic letters are issued following a consultation. The doctor will only document conditions they have clinically assessed.

Medical letters for courts and legal proceedings
Legal proceedings frequently require medical evidence. The quality and objectivity of medical documentation can significantly affect outcomes. The Online GP provides medical evidence for legal purposes with all letters reflecting the doctor's factual findings and professional opinion.
Medical evidence for court hearings. Letters and reports documenting medical conditions relevant to proceedings. Our doctors understand that court-directed medical evidence must be factual, objective, and referenced to clinical findings. The doctor acts as a witness of fact, not as an advocate for the patient's case.
Personal injury medical reports. For road traffic accidents, workplace injuries, slips, trips, and falls, and other personal injury claims. Reports document injuries observed on assessment, symptoms reported, treatment received, and expected prognosis.
Medical evidence for family court. In custody and family proceedings, medical evidence about a parent's health may be relevant. Reports are objective and factual.
Employment tribunal and benefit appeal evidence. Employment tribunals, disability discrimination cases, and benefit appeals may all require medical evidence. Our doctors structure letters to address the specific legal or tribunal questions being asked.
Immigration and visa medical reports. Some visa categories require medical assessments in specified formats. We provide reports compliant with UK Visas and Immigration requirements.
For all legal and court reports, the doctor clearly distinguishes between facts (what the patient reported, what the examination found) and opinion (the doctor's clinical interpretation). This distinction is essential for legal admissibility and compliance with Part 35 of the Civil Procedure Rules where applicable. Complex medico-legal reports may take one to three working days.

Medical letters for insurance
Insurance companies regularly require medical evidence. Delays in obtaining documentation can hold up claims or applications for months.
Travel insurance claims. Medical reports documenting illness or injury sustained abroad, supporting reimbursement claims.
Holiday cancellation evidence. Letters confirming the medical basis for trip cancellation and that travel was inadvisable at the relevant time.
Life and health insurance applications. GP medical reports for policy applications, completed promptly without NHS-typical delays.
Critical illness and income protection claims. Detailed medical documentation supporting claims under critical illness cover or income protection policies.
Insurance medical reports must be accurate and complete. Under GMC guidance, doctors must not omit relevant information or present misleading statements, even if requested by the patient.
Fitness assessments and medical clearance
Pre-employment medical assessments. Required by many employers in transport, security, construction, and healthcare before starting work. Same-day reporting available.
Fitness-to-travel and fitness-to-fly letters. Confirmation of fitness for air travel for patients with medical conditions. Accepted by airlines, cruise lines, and travel insurers.
Fitness-to-drive assessments. Medical assessments requested by the DVLA, or medical evidence regarding fitness to drive for any reason.
Sports and fitness medical clearance. For gym memberships, sporting events, or athletic competition requiring medical sign-off.
Diving medical assessments. Scuba diving medical certificates (HSE-approved assessment) for recreational and commercial diving.

What makes a good medical letter?
Not all medical letters carry the same weight. A poorly structured letter can be rejected, questioned, or fail to support the patient's case. Every medical letter from The Online GP meets the following standards.
Clear clinical basis. Letters reference specific clinical findings, symptoms reported, and diagnostic evidence. They do not just state conclusions but show the medical basis for those conclusions.
Professional formatting. Letters are produced on clinic-headed paper, include the date, the doctor's full name, GMC registration number, and full clinic contact details. They are structured with appropriate medical terminology for the intended audience.
Objective and factual. Particularly important for court and legal letters. Our doctors provide factual medical evidence without advocacy. Under GMC Good Medical Practice, doctors must be honest, trustworthy, and must not mislead in any medical document they sign.
Appropriate to the audience. A letter for an employer is written differently from a letter for court. We tailor language, detail, and structure to the specific recipient and purpose.
Timely. NHS GPs typically quote two to four weeks for private medical letters. The Online GP delivers same-day in most cases.
The process
1. Contact us. WhatsApp, email team@thewellnesslondon.com, or call 020 3951 3428. Tell us what type of letter you need, who it is for, and any deadline.
2. Consultation. A GMC-registered doctor conducts a video or telephone consultation. Bring any relevant medical records, previous letters, or documentation about the purpose of the letter. The doctor will assess your condition and discuss what the letter needs to address.
3. Letter issued. In most cases, emailed as a PDF on the same day. Complex reports may take one to three working days. The letter is produced on The Wellness clinic-headed paper with full doctor and clinic details.
