Can a private GP write a medical letter in the UK?
Yes. Any GMC-registered doctor can issue medical letters following a clinical assessment. There is no requirement for medical letters to come from an NHS GP. A letter from a private doctor carries the same weight as one from an NHS GP, provided the doctor has personally assessed the patient and is writing within the scope of their clinical competence. Under GMC Good Medical Practice (paragraphs 63-65), doctors must be honest and objective in any document they prepare and must not write or sign documents they believe to be misleading or untrue.
The Online GP by The Wellness issues most medical letters same-day following a consultation. NHS practices typically quote two to four weeks for private letters and charge £50 to £150 for basic documentation. Our service is designed for patients who need accurate, detailed medical letters delivered quickly by experienced private doctors.
Medical letters for employers
Employers request medical documentation across a wide range of workplace situations. The Online GP provides the following employer-facing letters, each issued after a genuine clinical consultation.
Fit notes (sick notes). Fit notes are issued following a clinical assessment if the doctor determines the patient's condition affects their fitness for work. Video consultations for fit note assessments start from £250. Telephone consultations from £150 may be appropriate for shorter-duration matters of less than one week. A fit note is never guaranteed and is always at the sole clinical discretion of the doctor. Full details on our dedicated sick note page.
Fitness-for-work letters. Confirming a patient is medically fit to perform their role, or documenting adjustments recommended. Required when returning from extended sick leave, after surgery, or when starting a new position. The doctor assesses the patient's current condition against the demands of the role.
Reasonable adjustments letters. Under the Equality Act 2010, employers must consider reasonable adjustments for employees with disabilities or long-term health conditions. A detailed medical letter from a GMC-registered doctor documenting the condition, its functional impact, and recommended adjustments strengthens the employee's legal position. According to ACAS, failure to make reasonable adjustments may constitute disability discrimination.
Occupational health support letters. When an employer requests a medical opinion on a patient's ability to carry out specific duties, manage shift patterns, or work in particular environments. The letter addresses the employer's specific questions while respecting patient confidentiality under the Access to Medical Reports Act 1988.
Return-to-work medical clearance. Some employers require formal clearance before an employee resumes duties, particularly after surgery, serious illness, or mental health absence. The doctor assesses current fitness and provides a clear written statement of capacity.
The doctor will only include clinical information the patient consents to sharing. Patients have the right to see and approve any employer-facing letter before it is sent.

Medical letters for universities and schools
Academic institutions require medical evidence, and timing is often critical during exam season and around coursework deadlines.
Mitigating circumstances and extenuating circumstances letters. If illness has affected a student's ability to sit exams, submit coursework, or attend lectures, a detailed medical letter documenting the condition and its impact on academic function is essential. University panels expect letters that confirm the diagnosed condition, specify the dates affected, explain the functional impact on academic performance, address severity, and include the doctor's professional opinion. Our doctors regularly produce mitigating circumstances letters for students at universities across the UK and understand the specificity that panels require. According to the Office for Students, UK universities processed over 1.2 million mitigating circumstances claims in 2023/24. The quality of medical evidence is the primary factor determining outcomes.
Exam deferral letters. Supporting applications to defer examinations due to illness. Time-sensitive. Same-day delivery in most cases.
Postgraduate and professional course evidence. PhD students, medical students, law students, and those on professional programmes face higher documentation requirements for interruptions, extensions, or fitness-to-practise assessments. Our doctors provide letters addressing the specific academic and professional impact.
School absence letters. For parents who need medical evidence to explain prolonged absence from school, particularly where attendance monitoring has been triggered. Under the Education Act 1996, local authorities can issue penalty notices for unauthorised absence. A letter from a GMC-registered doctor documenting the child's illness provides formal evidence the absence was genuine.
International student documentation. Tier 4 and Student visa holders must maintain academic engagement. A detailed medical letter documenting the reason for interruption supports UKVI visa compliance.

Medical letters for insurance
Insurance companies regularly require medical evidence, and delays in obtaining documentation can hold up claims or applications for months.
Travel insurance claims. Medical letters documenting illness or injury sustained abroad, supporting reimbursement claims. The letter covers diagnosis, treatment received, and clinical justification for any costs claimed.
Holiday cancellation evidence. Confirmation that a medical condition existed at the relevant time and that travel was inadvisable, supporting cancellation claims.
Life and health insurance applications. GP medical letters for policy applications, completed within days rather than the weeks typical of NHS practices.
Critical illness and income protection claims. Detailed medical letters supporting claims under critical illness cover or income protection policies.
Insurance letters must be accurate and complete. Under GMC guidance, doctors must not omit relevant information or present misleading statements, even if requested by the patient.
Fitness assessments and medical clearance certificates
Pre-employment medical assessments. Required by employers in transport, security, construction, healthcare, and offshore industries before starting work. Includes assessment and written certificate. Same-day reporting available.

What makes a well-written medical letter?
Not all medical letters carry the same weight. A poorly structured letter can be rejected, questioned, or fail to support a patient's case. Every medical letter from The Online GP meets the following clinical and professional standards.
Clear clinical basis. Letters reference specific findings from the consultation, symptoms assessed, and clinical evidence. They do not state conclusions without showing the medical basis for those conclusions.
Professional formatting. Produced on The Wellness clinic-headed paper, including the date, doctor's full name, GMC registration number, and full clinic contact details.
Objective and factual. Particularly important for employer and insurance letters. The letter reflects what the doctor found on assessment and their honest professional opinion. Under GMC guidance, doctors must be truthful in any document they sign.
Appropriate to the audience. An employer letter is written differently from an insurance letter. We tailor language, clinical detail, and structure to the specific recipient and purpose.
Timely. Same-day in most cases. NHS GPs typically quote two to four weeks for private medical letters. We aim to deliver within hours of the consultation.
The process
1. Contact us. WhatsApp, email team@thewellnesslondon.com, or call 020 3951 3428. Tell us what type of letter you need, who it is for, and any deadline. We will confirm pricing and availability.
2. Consultation. A GMC-registered doctor conducts a video or telephone consultation. Bring any relevant medical records, previous letters, or documentation about the letter's purpose. The doctor assesses your condition and discusses what the letter needs to address.
3. Letter issued. Emailed as a PDF, usually same-day. Produced on The Wellness clinic-headed paper with full doctor and clinic details.

Frequently asked questions about private medical letters
Are private medical letters accepted by employers? Yes. Letters from GMC-registered doctors are accepted by UK employers, universities, insurers, and government bodies. There is no legal distinction between a letter from a private GP and one from an NHS GP.
How quickly can I get a medical letter? Same-day in most cases. Standard letters are typically emailed within hours of the consultation. WhatsApp us for same-day availability.
Can you write a letter without seeing me? No. GMC Good Medical Practice requires that a doctor assess a patient before issuing any medical document. We do not issue letters without a consultation.
Do you provide letters in languages other than English? Consultations are available in English, Arabic, Spanish, French, and Dutch. Letters are produced in English. Certified translations can be arranged if required.
Why are your prices higher than some online services? Our letters are written by experienced GMC-registered doctors following a genuine clinical assessment, not generated from questionnaire responses. Every letter is individually drafted to address the specific requirements of the recipient. This level of clinical rigour and professional responsibility is reflected in the fee. Poorly written or template medical letters are frequently rejected by employers, universities, and insurers.
