Why 160 markers is not better than 40 chosen well
Marker count is the easiest thing to sell and the weakest predictor of whether testing helps you. The markers that change management are a defined set. Apolipoprotein B, because it counts the particles that enter artery walls and catches people whose standard cholesterol reads acceptably. Lipoprotein little a, inherited, raised in 1 in 5 people, established as causal in the Copenhagen population studies, and needing 1 measurement in a lifetime. HbA1c, which finds the prediabetic decade while the Diabetes Prevention Program’s 58 percent reduction in progression is still available to you. Thyroid function, liver enzymes, kidney function, ferritin and iron studies, B12, folate, vitamin D and inflammatory markers.
Beyond those, additional markers mostly add noise. Every extra test carries a chance of an out-of-range result that means nothing, and a panel of 160 markers on a healthy person will reliably produce several. Each one then generates a retest, a search, a worry, or a supplement bought to correct a number that was never a problem.
The value was never in the count. It sits in choosing the right markers for your history and reading them against you rather than against a reference range built from strangers.
What a dashboard cannot do
A reference range describes what is common in a population, not what is ideal for you, and the edges are where the medicine lives. A ferritin of 28 is a diagnosis in a tired woman with heavy periods and unremarkable in a 25-year-old man. A TSH at the top of range means one thing at 30 and another at 70. An HbA1c of 41 is technically normal and a trajectory worth interrupting. No algorithm reads those correctly without knowing you, and no platform asks.
The second gap is causation. Abnormal results are findings that require a why, and the why is frequently the diagnosis.
