When should you call a private GP for a home visit?
A GP home visit is appropriate when you need medical attention but cannot reasonably attend a clinic. NHS GP home visits are increasingly rare due to capacity constraints, with many practices only offering them for housebound patients. A private GP home visit provides the same clinical service as a clinic consultation, delivered at a location convenient to you.
Common situations where patients request a home visit include acute illness making travel difficult or unsafe, such as severe back pain, vertigo, high fever, or post-operative recovery. Elderly patients or those with mobility limitations who find travelling to a clinic physically challenging. Parents with unwell young children who prefer to avoid waiting rooms. Post-surgical patients who have been discharged but need GP follow-up at home. Mental health conditions where attending a clinic feels overwhelming, such as severe anxiety, agoraphobia, or depression. Busy professionals who need a GP consultation at their office or workplace. International visitors staying at London hotels who need medical attention. End-of-life care and palliative support where clinic attendance is not practical.
A home visit does not replace emergency care. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 999.

What can a doctor do during a home visit?
A private GP home visit is a full medical consultation. The doctor brings the same clinical capability as a clinic appointment, with the addition of being able to observe the patient in their own environment, which can be particularly informative for elderly patients, mental health assessments, and paediatric consultations.
Clinical assessment and diagnosis. The doctor conducts a full history and examination. Home visits allow more time than a typical clinic appointment, and patients are often more relaxed and communicative in familiar surroundings.
Prescribing. The doctor can prescribe medication during the visit. Private prescriptions are issued electronically and can be collected from any pharmacy, or we can arrange pharmacy delivery to the patient's address.
Blood tests. The doctor can take blood samples during the home visit. Samples are sent to an accredited laboratory and results are typically available within 24 to 48 hours. Common panels include full blood count, liver and kidney function, thyroid function, diabetes screening, vitamin D, B12, ferritin, lipid profile, and hormone panels.
Fit notes and medical letters. If the doctor determines, following a clinical assessment, that a fit note or medical letter is appropriate, it can be issued during or immediately after the visit. Fit notes are emailed as a PDF same-day. Medical letters are produced on The Wellness clinic-headed paper.
Referrals. The doctor can write same-day referral letters to private specialists, arrange urgent investigations (imaging, echocardiogram, endoscopy), or coordinate hospital admission if clinically indicated.
Minor procedures. Depending on the clinical situation, the doctor may be able to perform certain minor procedures at home, including wound assessment, ear examination, basic dermatological assessment, and ECG where portable equipment is available.
Ongoing and follow-up care. For patients who are housebound or prefer home-based care, regular home visit schedules can be arranged for chronic disease management, medication reviews, and ongoing monitoring.
How much does a private GP home visit cost in London?
Home visit pricing reflects the dedicated time of a GMC-registered doctor, travel, and the comprehensive nature of the consultation. Pricing is in line with established London concierge GP services.

Private GP home visits for international visitors and hotel guests
London welcomes over 20 million international visitors annually. If you are visiting London and become unwell, accessing NHS care as a visitor can be complex, slow, and involve lengthy A&E waits for non-emergency conditions.
The Online GP provides same-day home visits to hotels and serviced apartments across central London. Our doctors consult in English, Arabic, Spanish, French, and Dutch, making the service particularly accessible for visitors from the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America.
Services commonly requested by international visitors include assessment and treatment of acute illness (respiratory infections, gastrointestinal illness, fever), prescriptions for medication needed during the trip, travel health certificates and fitness-to-fly letters, medical letters for travel insurance claims, and coordination with the patient's home doctor or insurer.
We also provide medical certificates confirming illness or treatment for travel insurance claims and trip interruption documentation.

Final charges are determined by the clinic. Location, duration, and clinical requirements affect the fee. Patients are informed before the visit is confirmed.
