Running Out of Essential Medication While Visiting the UK 2026. Insulin, Inhalers, Heart and Epilepsy Drugs and What to Do Today
Some medication can wait a day and some cannot, and knowing which category you are in decides everything about how fast you need to move. Insulin, asthma and COPD inhalers, epilepsy medication, anticoagulants, heart failure and blood pressure treatment, thyroid replacement, steroids taken long term, immunosuppressants and transplant medication all sit in the group where a missed few days carries real risk. Stopping long-term steroids abruptly can precipitate an adrenal crisis.
Missing anticoagulation raises clot and stroke risk within days. Interrupted epilepsy medication is one of the commonest triggers for a breakthrough seizure. Transplant patients who miss immunosuppressants risk rejection. None of that is a reason to panic in London, because the fix is same-day and straightforward, but it is a reason not to wait until Monday or until you get home. A GMC-registered doctor can assess you, issue a valid UK private prescription, and have you collecting from a pharmacy within hours, without registration, referral or insurance. Bring or photograph whatever evidence you have, because a picture of the packaging showing the drug name and strength solves most of the identification problem in seconds. At The Wellness in Marylebone, 3 minutes from Baker Street, visitors are seen the same day, by video from £150, in the clinic from £220, or at a hotel or apartment from £495, 7 days a week, with consultations available in Arabic, French, Spanish and Dutch. Fees appear further down this page.

The medications where days matter
Insulin is the clearest case. A person with type 1 diabetes without insulin develops ketoacidosis, which is a medical emergency, and there is no safe number of days to go without it. If you have type 1 diabetes and no insulin, contact us now or attend an emergency department, and do not wait to see whether you feel unwell.
Long-term steroids are the most underestimated. Anyone taking prednisolone or hydrocortisone regularly cannot stop abruptly, because suppressed adrenal function leaves the body unable to respond to illness or stress, and adrenal crisis is life-threatening. This includes people who consider their dose small.
Anticoagulants including warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban and others protect against stroke and clot, and the protection stops when the drug does, within days for the direct oral agents. Epilepsy medication interruption is one of the commonest causes of breakthrough seizures and carries driving and safety consequences. Immunosuppressants after transplant protect the graft, and missed doses risk rejection.
Then the group where a few days is uncomfortable rather than dangerous but still worth solving quickly. Asthma preventer inhalers, thyroid replacement, heart failure and blood pressure medication, antidepressants and antipsychotics where abrupt withdrawal causes real symptoms, contraception where a gap changes protection, and HRT.
What a doctor needs from you
The drug name and the strength, which is why a photograph of the box, blister strip or pharmacy label does most of the work. Brand names differ between countries and the same molecule is sold under different names in different markets, so the generic name and the milligrams matter more than the brand you are used to.
Then the picture around it. What condition it treats, how long you have taken it, your dose and timing, what else you take, any allergies, and whether anything has changed recently. For some medications a doctor also needs a measurement before prescribing, blood pressure for antihypertensives, a blood test for anticoagulants or thyroid replacement in some circumstances, which is exactly why being seen by a clinic with testing on site is quicker than a remote-only service.
If you have your repeat list, a specialist letter, a discharge summary or your national health app, send those. If you have nothing, we can still help, and with your consent we can contact your own doctor or pharmacy to verify. It takes longer, which is the only reason to send what you have first.
Send a photo of your medication on WhatsApp or email team@thewellnesslondon.com.
What to do in the next hour
If your symptoms are severe, call 999. Chest pain, breathing difficulty, stroke symptoms, a seizure that will not stop, severe allergic reaction or a diabetic emergency are emergency department situations rather than prescription appointments, and no clinic worth using will tell you otherwise.
If you are well but out of medication, message us with a photograph and your location. We will tell you what is possible before you book, including if the answer is that your medication is a controlled drug we cannot appropriately issue at a first consultation, in which case we will point you to the correct route rather than take a booking.
Then choose the format that fits your day. A video consultation is usually enough for a straightforward continuation and is the fastest. An in-person appointment is right where an examination or measurement is needed. A hotel or apartment visit suits families, anyone unwell, and anyone whose day cannot accommodate travelling across London. In all 3, the prescription is issued in the appointment and we identify a pharmacy that holds your medication rather than sending you to search.
What it costs in London
Hotel doctor services and concierge practices in central London charge £400 to £600 and above per visit, frequently within membership structures carrying joining fees. Harley Street consultations run £250 to £350 before any prescription is issued. Beneath that sits a tier defined by its conditions rather than its price, short remote appointments with no examination, no on-site testing where a medication requires monitoring, and no clinic behind them if the picture is more complicated than a repeat.
At The Wellness the consultation, the prescription, any testing needed and the pharmacy arrangement are handled together. All figures are from prices.
Hotel, apartment or residence visit, evenings and weekends, from £695.
Hotel, apartment or residence visit, daytime, from £495, with additional family members seen in the same visit from £195 each.
In-person consultation at the Marylebone clinic, with examination, from £220.
Same-day video consultation with a GMC-registered doctor, from £150.
Blood tests on site where a medication requires monitoring, from £295, with core results back the same day.
Private prescription issued in the appointment, with a pharmacy holding your medication identified. Medication is paid for at the pharmacy at private prescription prices.
Same-day appointments 7 days a week in Marylebone, 3 minutes from Baker Street.
Why The Wellness is the best place for visitors on essential medication
Because essential medication frequently needs more than a prescription, and this is a clinic rather than a prescribing service. If your blood pressure needs measuring before a renewal, if your anticoagulation or thyroid needs a blood test, if you have been unwell and something needs checking before the dose continues, all of it happens in the same visit with results the same day rather than becoming a second appointment in a city you are only visiting.
Speed is built in. Same-day appointments 7 days a week, video within hours, hotel and apartment visits across London, and a photograph reviewed on WhatsApp before you book so the doctor already knows what you take. Families are seen together and priced sensibly, which matters when a grandparent, a parent and a child all need something.
And the honest answer comes first. Where a medication is a controlled drug we cannot appropriately prescribe to a visitor at a first consultation, you are told on the message rather than after payment, with a route that will actually work. For anyone in an unfamiliar system with a fixed number of days here, that is worth more than any promise.
Book a same-day appointment on WhatsApp or call 020 3951 3429.
Frequently asked questions
I have run out of insulin while visiting the UK. What should I do
Act today. There is no safe period without insulin for a person with type 1 diabetes, and untreated it leads to ketoacidosis, which is an emergency. Contact us immediately for a same-day consultation, by video from £150, in clinic from £220 or at your hotel from £495, and if you are already unwell attend an emergency department.
Which medications are dangerous to stop suddenly
Long-term steroids such as prednisolone and hydrocortisone, because abrupt withdrawal can cause adrenal crisis. Anticoagulants, because stroke and clot protection stops within days. Epilepsy medication, one of the commonest causes of breakthrough seizures when interrupted. Insulin. Immunosuppressants and transplant medication. Antidepressants and antipsychotics cause significant withdrawal symptoms if stopped abruptly.
Can I get an emergency supply from a UK pharmacy instead
Sometimes. Pharmacists have limited discretion to make an emergency supply at a patient's request, but quantities are restricted, most controlled drugs are excluded and the pharmacist must be satisfied about your previous treatment, which is where overseas visitors usually run into difficulty. A doctor's consultation and a UK prescription is the route that reliably works.
Do I need a blood test before my medication can be prescribed
Sometimes, depending on the drug. Anticoagulation, thyroid replacement and some other treatments may need a measurement before continuing safely, and blood pressure medication usually needs your blood pressure checking. Testing is available on site here from £295 with core results the same day, which is why an in-person appointment is sometimes faster overall than a remote one.
Can my whole family be seen in one visit
Yes, and it is the sensible approach when several people need something. Additional family members are seen in the same hotel or clinic visit from £195 each, with each person assessed and prescribed for separately.
Will you prescribe if my medication is not available in the UK
The doctor identifies the closest licensed equivalent, explains any difference in name, strength or formulation, and prescribes accordingly. Where nothing suitable exists, you will be told directly and helped to find the right route rather than sold an appointment.
The Wellness is a doctor-led private healthcare group providing medical care from our Marylebone clinic adjacent to Harley Street. All doctors are GMC-registered. Prescriptions are issued only following a consultation and clinical assessment, and only where the doctor considers them clinically appropriate. In an emergency call 999.
