Can You Fill a US Prescription in London? What American Visitors Need to Know in 2026
A prescription written in the United States cannot be dispensed by a pharmacy in London. UK pharmacists may only dispense prescriptions written by prescribers registered in the UK, or, under separate rules, by prescribers in the European Economic Area and Switzerland, so a US prescription, a photo of your pill bottle or a refill authorisation from your American pharmacy will not be accepted. The reliable route is a consultation with a UK doctor, who can review your medication and issue a UK private prescription the same day. Around 5.6 million Americans visited the UK in 2024, and nearly half of their nights were spent in London, so this is one of the most common problems a London doctor solves for visitors. Some medicines have different names here, so acetaminophen is paracetamol, albuterol is salbutamol and epinephrine is adrenaline, and a few US medicines are not sold in the UK at all, in which case a doctor will find the closest safe equivalent. Original Medicare generally does not cover care outside the United States, so check your travel insurance and keep your receipts. At The Wellness you can see a doctor the same day, 7 days a week, by video from £150, in person from £220 or at your hotel from £495, with the prescription issued in the appointment. Fees appear further down this page.

Key facts for American visitors
A US prescription cannot be dispensed by a UK pharmacy, including a refill authorisation or an electronic prescription.
A UK doctor can review your medication and issue a UK private prescription the same day.
Some medicines have different generic names in the UK, and some US products are not sold here.
Controlled medicines, including stimulants for ADHD, strong painkillers and benzodiazepines, cannot be issued at a first consultation without established records.
Keep every receipt, because many travel insurance policies reimburse the cost of seeing a doctor and of the medicine.
Why will a London pharmacy not accept my US prescription
UK law allows pharmacists to dispense prescriptions written by prescribers registered in the UK. Government guidance also allows pharmacists to dispense, at their discretion, prescriptions from prescribers in the European Economic Area and Switzerland, excluding controlled drugs. The United States falls outside both, so a pharmacist cannot legally dispense your US prescription, however legitimate it is.
Pharmacists can sell some medicines without a prescription, such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, some antihistamines and some indigestion remedies. For anything that needs a prescription in the UK, you need to see a UK doctor.
What should I bring to the appointment
Your medication, if you still have some, in its original packaging. A photo of the label works if the bottle is at home.
A list of every medicine with its exact dose and how often you take it. Your US pharmacy app or patient portal usually shows this.
A summary of the condition it treats, recent test results if your medicine needs monitoring, and the name of your US doctor.
The more of this you have, the more confidently a doctor can prescribe, often for the full length of your stay.

Which US medicine names are different in the UK
The active ingredient is the same, only the name differs. Acetaminophen is called paracetamol. Albuterol, the reliever in many inhalers, is called salbutamol. Epinephrine, including in auto-injectors for severe allergy, is called adrenaline. Glyburide, a diabetes medicine, is called glibenclamide. Meperidine is called pethidine.
Brand names often differ too, and the same brand can contain a different strength or combination. A doctor checks the active ingredient and dose rather than the brand, which avoids the commonest prescribing errors for visitors.
Some US formulations, combination pills and extended-release versions are not sold in the UK. In that case the doctor prescribes the closest safe alternative and explains any difference in how to take it.
Which medicines cannot be prescribed at a first visit
Controlled medicines, including stimulants for ADHD, opioid painkillers, benzodiazepines and some sleeping tablets, are tightly regulated in the UK. They cannot appropriately be issued at a first consultation without established records, and some US products in these groups are not available here at all.
If you take a controlled medicine, bring enough for your whole trip, carry it in your hand luggage with a letter from your US doctor, and check the UK rules before you travel. Our guide to travelling to the UK with medication explains what is needed.
When is running out urgent
Some medicines are dangerous to stop suddenly. Insulin, anti-epileptic medicines, heart and blood pressure medicines, blood thinners, steroids, transplant medicines and some medicines for mental health all need to be replaced the same day.
If you have run out of insulin and feel unwell, are vomiting, or have a seizure, chest pain or breathing difficulty, call 999.
